    Hi

I've just purchased a 42PMA400e Hitachi plasma. THe picture quality is amazing though my DVD player, but Sky plus is a little odd on some channels. But before I start to look into the Sky problem, the fan noise is far too loud for my likeing.

Has anyone heard of a solution - maybe taking it out, or replacing it with a quieter fan.

    Hope you can help.

    Regards

    Dave

    Hi Dave,

I don't think there is a cure for the noisy fan. Maybe you should trade it in for a silent Pioneer 433MXE. ;)

    acollins,

No fan in the panel with a media box (42PD3000, right ?) - 'cos they put all the hot stuff in the media box, the screen doesn't need a fan.

    Cheers, Carl.

is the issue with the better black something that is noticable or do you need them side by side to tell any slight difference.

    Cheers

    Hi

Just rang Chester - THey have said that they can't tell me where the switch is as it would invalidate the warranty. I actually purchased it from Richer Sounds Preston and they told me that Hitachi UK had provided them with instructions on how to turn it off and the effect would be 20% reduction in life, but wouldn't invalidate the warranty. Problem solved I thought! However, Hitachi Japan told the UK that this wasn't true.

I've contacted Hitachi UK - and they deny everything but did say they were looking into it.

If there is a switch, I'll let this forum know - I'm going to risk it!

Looking on the web now - If anyone finds anything, please drop me a line.

    Cheers

    Dave

i can notice the difference but i think you would need to see them to really get an idea of the difference sometimes slightly better on a plasma can make a big difference

No fan switch on mine delivered 2 days ago, unless it's behind the grill, out of sight. But I have just played a Hi Definition US D-Theater tape of the film "Cast away" through it. To say this blows away all other sources (including DVD) is an understatement.. Fantastic.
    Totally recommend the 400E.

    Hi

Opened the back, unplugged the fan and turned it back on. It didn't work. Plugged the fan back in and it's fine.

Ordered a silent fan to replace - will let the forum know if it works.

    Regards

    Dave

I'm really interested in how this works out.....what kind of fan have you ordered? I have a Hitachi CMP4121HDE and can't fault it apart from the fan noise. Maybe even slowing the buggers down would help....they seem to speed up as ambient temp rises.

Wow! Two D Blakes with a 42PMA400! How wierd is that? :smashin:

I'll be interested in the silent fan thing. I put mine on the wall last night and am bit concerned about how loud the nose will be now it is in front of a reflective surface...

Mind you , I'm not looking forward to lugging the damn thing off the wall again!

    Hi Darren

Mine also is on the wall reflecting the noise off plasterboard. I do believe that Richer Sounds (where I bought mine from) have instructions on how to turn the fan off, if the silent fan doesn't work.

They are back in tomorrow and I'll get them to send me the instructions.

By the way, how have you connected Sky - I'm slightly disappointed with mine.

Remember - all these mods effectively terminate any warranty we have in the first year.

    Regards

    Dave

Well, at the moment I'm not connected to anything, but it'll happen this weekend when I buy my Denon 1803.

The videophiles are going to kill me for this, but I'm connecting everything via S-video (except my PC, which will use one of the 15 pin RGB ports). I didn't have the budget for the necessary extra kit to up-convert all my sources to component, plus I'm not going mad over PQ (yet).

I've also got the Denon 1803 - Are we related??!!

I've connected via a 5 metre cable direct from Sky +. My Denon 2800Mk2 DVD is connected via component which is absolutely amazing. I'll be interested to hear about your Sky quality. I put a thread in another catagory about Sky and apparently, the better the TV you have, the more it shows the limitations of Sky. SOme channels are better than others. But occationally, you get a video conferencing effect. I suspect this is to do with the bit rate.

Let me know after the weekend how you get on.

    Cheers

    Dave

Maybe we need to start a 400E owner's club. Had mine just a few days now, and I am getting good pics on everything. Sky,(damn the DOGS), Freeview, DVD,(all component), Hi Def NTSC tape, and D-Vhs VCR's via the S input.
( One last plug for Hi Def though - if you can get a JVC D-Vhs VCR from the US and a Hi Def tape to go with it .. you will not be disappointed !)
That's the real reason for getting a Plasma - after all. It's not just about size !
    This is the future guys.
Sorry, the heat's getting to me...
    Regards
btw... Hang some curtain behind the screen. That will deaden the fan noise somewhat. Works for me.

Darren - Don't worry about videophiles or what other people may think. What matters is your picture quality and an S-Video source can be very good if not quite as good as RGB/Component. As with all things, fashion to some extent does affect what people do and think.

S-Video sources do vary on how well they are implemented. The ones from my Sky+ and DVD are very good where another one was complete rubbish. The same can be said for RGB/Component ones as well for variation in quality.

dblake is so right in that the better the display, the more defects/variation in quality you will see in the source.

Unfortunately my screen remains unconnected because both the 1803 and my rear speaker stands were out of stock. So I remain TV-less for another week. Should be all cysterns go for this Saturday, though :smashin:

Well I finally got my HC system all set up at the weekend.

I tested it out watching the Band of Brothers boxed set that I borrowed off a friend, and in the bits where they weren't shooting the hell out of each other, I must say that the fan was a bit intrusive, now that the noise is being reflected back from the wall.

Mind you, it was late at night and I had the volume down for fear of upsetting the neighbours with my new subwoofer ;-)

I'll have to live with it for a while to see if it spoils my enjoyment of the screen enough to do something about it.

    Hi

Unfortuately - although I have the fan, the connector is different. I'm really struggling to find the same connector as I do not want to just rewire the current fan if it doesn't work.

Richer Sounds knows the answer to turn this off, but have been instructed not to tell its customers. They have told me that if we searched on the web, we should find the answers.
    I haven't!!
I suspect its through the service menu that people dicuss about plasmas, but no idea how to get it.

    I'll keep you informed

    Regards

    Dave

You might want to have a read here.

This makes me suspect that any fix will not be a service menu tweak.

I still have not heard anything more back from Hitachi...

    Hi

Brill news - I'm going to wait - It looks like they are taking the fan noise seriously. Look forward to your news when the mod is available.

    Many thanks
