Okay, I've got my head round the vertical (or is it horizontal..?)resolution issue and have got my 42/43"shortlist down to the Panasonic HD6, Pioneer 433MXE and 434HDE...

However I'm now really struggling with the aspect ratios... 1024 x 768 = 4:3 but the screen is physically 16:9 so it has rectangular shaped pixels..? Surely this cannot be ideal...

However the standard 'low resolution' 852 x 480 panels are 16:9 and therefore I assume square pixels..? Better..?

How do the native 1024 x 768 panels display a true 16:9 input..?

Or am I totally missing the point..?

And I thought choosing a plasma would be easy..!

    SimonO,

Below is an extract discussing the shape of pixels taken from AVSFORUM:-

    Simon,

Yes, thats one that I wouldnt & didn't worry about.

If I were you, and youve got the cash, look to the future ! - the latest generation HD displays of the Pioneers and Panasonics are certainly the two that I would short list.

I like the Aesthetics of the new Pioneer 434HDE as well, it looks pretty smart.

    Happy viewing :smashin:

Lat addition here, it does matter if you want to display PC sources, but even then mostly you can see a windvd or similar image OK, it's just web or text that looks silly if yoy have a rectangular pixel screen. The 503mxe you can't really tell, the stretching is pretty small, only 6% or so.

It sounds to me like you may want to go for the HDE purely for the simplicity of setup and connectivity. On various occasions MXE owners have had to add format converters and switchers, which not only adds cost but can get complicated for someone breaking into this hobby.
