He went forward. Humans built the Statue of Liberty many years previously, then apes became the dominant species on the planet and became the human's masters. Basically mankind regressed and apes progressed to the top of the evolutionary chain.

That's why that monkey George Bush is running the USA these days.

Nooo not the old one, the 'new' Planet of the Apes with chumney rapper geeza, Mark something.
When he went 'back' at the end, as per his time reading in the capsule, the world was as today but had Apes as policemen and the Abraham Lincoln statue was a frickin ape!! I was a tad confused too  seeing he had gone forward at the start. So what went back to alter the past??

If he had gone back to humans there would be no opening for the sequel

I think he must have gone into an alternate universe as the time dial said he had gone back in time, but the statue was to General Thade.
He could not have gone to the future as everything was 20/21st century not unless you believe in big coincidences.

Best thing to do is watch the first and better adaptation, or read the book if you can find it, called Monkey Planet by Pierre Boulle.

I have read that there is no explanation. It was simply Tim Burton having a bit of a laugh and putting in a weird ending. But I'd love to know if anyone can explain it...

Rubbish film. Rubbish ending. Just going for a cheap twist at the end. The originals are so much better and at least make "sense"!

a few good things about the film are the costume design and ape effects,i also thought the theme tune over the opening credits sounded superb in dts.

As they say a highly implausible explanation.
Since the apes were as far as I remember still not in the age of electricity. To get to where they were would take a very large leap in technology and manufacturing processes.

Tim Burtons "re-imagining" of POTA's is one of the worst things ever made!! (just Hollywood eating itself alive!!)

Watch the Heston version its far better!!! "Get your hands off me you filthy ape"

The ending doesn't make sense and, according to this link, it isn't supposed to.

So Fox claim that it was all simply a setup for a sequel.

    :nono:
(Agree, the original is MUCH better)

    :lesson:

"Take your stinking paws off me you damn dirty ape"

Or in the remake (which I actually quite enjoyed and am a big fan of the originals too)...

"Take your stinking hands off me you damn dirty human"

An other quote from the two films:

Charlton Heston/George Taylor : YOU MANIACS. YOU BLEW IT UP. DAMN YOU. GOD DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL.

Charlton Heston /Thade's Father : Damn them!
General Thade : I will stop him, father.
Thade's Father : Damn them... damn them all to hell!
