I am off to watch the rugby on the 12th of February and am taking my girlfriend, the initial plan was to just go up for the day but as it is so close to valentines day i was thinking of making it into a valentines weekend. So with that in mind i want to book a nice restaurant for us to eat..any suggestions?

I can recommend the Thai House restaurant in Churchill Way. If you like Thai food, it's probably the best in Cardiff and the longest established.

What sort of food are you after and what sort of price? I assume you'll be staying in the city centre?

Could try Jamies italian nice food but I'm not sure you can book. The park Plaza hotel has a nice restaurant in it:
Park Plaza Cardiff - Dining & Bars

Just outside the city centre is mina's its lebanese cuisine and really nice if you fancy something a bit different. Mina Restaurant and Café Bar

If you're going to cardiff bay there are loads of places there such as bay-side brasserie which is quite nice. Gallery

Good chinese food look at the happy gathering Chinese restaurants in Cardiff | Happy Gathering mix of traditional and modern british chinese and favoured by the chinese community

There are some really nice places on the outskirts Brains | Ty Mawr Sample Menu is very good and relatively recently redone. Has good specials with local welsh food and althoughit is a pub it has seperate dining and drinking areas, great views out over Cardiff. Has recently started growing some of its own food as well!

There are a few to get you started. Depends what you want and where you'll be staying and whether you can travel.

Also a friend tells me the canteen on clifton street is very good value and amazing food slightly limited choice but have not heard of anyone who wasnt very impressed. Canteen on Clifton Street

The grape and olive is also good but a little out the way as well. Dining | Grape and Olive The CHATEAUBRIAND FOR TWO (per person £23.00)
18oz of prime Welsh fillet, roasted and served medium rare with seasoned fries, rocket, roasted vine tomatoes and béarnaise sauce
    Is amazing but quite pricey!

Casanova's is good and in the right area if you like Italian.

Canteen on Clifton street is by far the best food in Cardiff but is a bit out of the way and not too stylish if that's important to you.

The Potted Pig is getting great reviews although I haven't tried it myself.

Yopu can't book Jamies, and it'll be rammed on an International weekend (especially Valentine's weekend).

All the places mentioned are good - plus there's all the usual suspects (Bella Italia, Zizzi, Prezzo, etc).

Directly opposite Jamies in The Hayes is Giovannis - it's a family-run place that's been there for years. Just around the corner in Mill Lane there's plenty of restaurants.

Also, try and squeeze your way into the Old Arcade & the City Arms - the Brains beers in both are superb.

And you really should visit Dorothy's in Caroline Street for chicken curry & chips in a tray....

Be aware there will be a LOT of people in the City Centre that weekend so places will be really busy, but there should be a great atmosphere in town. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Croeso i Caerdydd - as we say in Cardiff!!!

Like BT Bob says above, be prepared not to get into a lot of places, the city centre is rammed on international days especially as the stadium is right in the centre of town.

For the best chippy in Cardiff I'd recommend my regular, "The Codfather" in Cowbridge Road East in Canton. The fish is great and the prices moderately cheap.

But do NOT go to "Harry Ramsden's" in the bay, their food is very bad and expensive despite the company's excellent reputation.
