I thought this guide might help some and give you an idea how many pixels you need for a photo and maybe reassure some who think they need 50mp cameras

How Many Megapixels Do You Really Need?

I will look for another article I have read in the past that was quite good (can't seem to find it now). Basically it explains how many pixels you need to print very large photos, but takes into account viewing distance as you dont need 300ppi for an 8m x 10 m print as your viewing distance from the print increases etc

I'm curious what people think in practice with regards to resolution and print sizes, it's a while since I did poster printing at which point I was using source photos from 5MP/8MP 4/3 sensors which is well below what's stated as required and the results were great.

Good reading but... if you want to do this with your DSLR camera and lenses:

... you need not only high grade lenses but also, lots of pixels - 24 MP in this case - and it also helps to have the built-in crop factor of an APS-C sensor and a good teleconverter.
