Hands up who thinks this was a big pile of old smelly pants... Sci-Fi is dying a death at the moment. The last really original and entertaining sci-fi flick I remember seeing was 'Cube'. We need more stuff of the calibre of The Matrix and Fifth Element. ------------------ "What the fudge - if ya cant say it, ya can't do it..."
I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE ENDING. THERE WAS NOTHING REMOTELY CLEVER ABOUT IT. BEST WISHES! ------------------ Rachael, the big disc cat!
I have a friend who saw Mission to Mars at the cinema and said it made him embarrassed to say he was a sci fi fan. I have not seen it yet, is it really that bad? ------------------ I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit.....it's the only way to be sure.
I was expecting Pitch Black to be low budget rubbish. I was pleasantly surprised. The effects were good and i enjoyed the film.
Pitch Black was a pretty average albeit enjoyable movie until the end, the "I'll die for them, not for you" (and the actions taken directly after this) sequence completley gobsmacked me! Very clever and totally unexpected, funny too as most people I've spoken to totally misunderstand what happens! Dumb ****s ------------------ Richy B That is a matter of opinion and I don't give a **** about yours! [This message has been edited by Richy B (edited 09-12-2000).]
Well I liked it quite a lot. ------------------ Everybody be cool. YOU, be cool. -------------------------------------- ptmbradley@yahoo.co.uk http://www.geocities.com/ptmbradley
I really liked the film. Excellent opening crash, one of the best I've seen/heard. Well made throughout, considering the budget. The aliens were actually pretty good. I was not bored once. Plenty of people to be eaten gratuitously! Pleasantly suprised. Thumbs up. No comment on actors, I don't worry about their 'talent', just so long as I enjoy the film. No one, for example can say Arnie can act, and yet he's a film God! So overall, very good. (For fair representation, the missus thought it was awful, but what does she know? ) ------------------ Douch!!......Wot's da madder, da CIA got you pushing too many penzils? Yeah I agree with the last two posts, I love Pitch Black. The special fx are good, the plot is different to the usual crap we see these days, the opening scene is an absolute classic and I've enjoyed watching it more than once. Very enjoyable. (some of the acting is a bit dodgey but who cares?) Superb DTS sound as well ------------------ Tee http://www.electronicreality.co.uk
In fact, I'm all alone in the house tonight so I think I'll watch it again right now! And the neighbours are off to the pub... ------------------ Everybody be cool. YOU, be cool. -------------------------------------- ptmbradley@yahoo.co.uk http://www.geocities.com/ptmbradley
what can I say, I saw it at the pictures and now own it on DVD...one GREAT movie.... ------------------ mysteriousjimmy's home cinema
The alien beasties themselves are nice. (well done Penny) The crash at the start was dire IMO. (spacetruckers bad!) I thought the film itself was OK for the first 30 mins and I like the bit when they are all surrounded by darkness filled with millions of aliens which you don't see! (always the best policy with monsters) But the quality of the acting. The frankly lousy art direction (soldier anyone!) and costumes straight from Blake's 7 just meant it stank of low-budget and not in a good way!
Just watched the DVD and have to say that it was watchable - no surprises , nothing new, totally expected. As a sci fi nutter, it looks like origionality is becoming a rare commodity - where are all the films that were not afraid to taking chances? 60's - 2001 , doctor strangelove , planet of the apes , thx 1138 , time machine 70's - close encounters, star wars , alien, dark star , superman , westworld 80's - the terminator , ET , raiders of the lost ark , tron 90's - contact , the matrix , jurassic park, mars attacks , terminator 2 00 - ?
MTM - Not too bad. Rented it at the weekend. No extras what-so-ever - tight g*ts. Bit like 2001 without the doped up bit in the middle. Robbins and Sinise are totally wasted in this. Switch your brain off when you start watching this one (plus the molecular biology in it is pants). Cheers
While I agre that Pitch Black was not worth more than a rental (if even that), I don't think that either The matrix or Fifth Element were that original. Both Dark City and Thirteenth Floor were, IMHO, superior to the Matrix in script, execution, actors etc. The Matrix may have had cooler SFX, like Fifth Element, but that only makes it more like Mission to Mars or Pitch Black, which are just effects-laden fluff... IMHO, we need more stuff of the calibre of Contact or The Arrival (or Dark City or Thirteenth Floor...)
I totally agree with your point but I hate Dark City with a vengeance: I thought the plot was unbelievably obvious (even without the moronic give away voice over at the start) Rufus Sewell is the proverbial drying paint (don't start me on Jenifer Connoly). William Hurt looked as if he'd rather be elsewhere. The editing was extremely choppy and intrusive (just like the crow). The soundtrack was really repetative and brash and the much vaunted modelwork looked just so! The Art direction was like a Panto. Luvvie! The best thing about it was the trailer! To each their own though.
Should have mentioned 'Contact' - an absolutely superb film that should have done far better than it did at the box office. This is actually one of my most watched DVD's!
For thought provoking sci-fi try GATTACA. Where might genetic testing and manipulation take us, maybe Gattaca.... ------------------ Rachael, the big disc cat!
That's right, I forgot that one. It's a great movie. Don't miss the Coda, which is in the deleted scenes section, that's one that should have been left in, IMHO... ------------------ --------------------------------------------- /Mikael No! Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.
I cant believe all you bums havnt mentioned blade runner-the best sci-fi movie ever made...but for crap/overrated sci-fi what about;- e.t.,close encounters, men in black(i hate that will smith-why is it that he can get away with racist comments like...i make these look good...alluding to the fact that the dumb old white man dont look as cool as the hip blackman..i`m sick to death of will smith, martin lawrence, eddie murphy, whoopi goldberg et al..these hip, smart talking...wise cracking blacks playing of the stupid whites-that aint racist?...anyway i digress...)....but pitch black was good....matrix slightly better...fifth element..could have been great -but the acting was dire.....ohhh...and lets not forget ..independence day with...will smith...playing...surprise-surprise...the hip..wisecracking black dude that saves the world..(course none of those white folk could have managed it-thats discounting the mad, drunken white guy who dies..) ...IT MAKES ME SO MAD...
I bet all you sci-fi fans can't wait to get your copy of Battlefield Earth.... You know your're going to buy it. Just to see if it's as crap as everyone says it is.
Charles - "American History X" wouldn't be in your movie collection by any chance would it? As for Close Encounters - BRILLIANT film! Have to agree on Blade Runner though, very very good. The point I was making was that RECENT sci-fi was going downhill IMO.
Recent things always seem to be going downhill. I don't think Sci-Fi is in a bad state at all? Depends what you call Sci-Fi, I suppose? Hollow Man? Battlefield Earth? At least there seems to be lots coming out? Maybe most is "bad", but it is a good sign of things to come?
Desade - you'r right - there is a great deal more sci fi films and tv out at the moment thanks to ever decreasing computer technology costs but so far , I'v only seen one film which I REALLY enjoyed - Titan AE . More does'nt necessarily mean better.
It seems to me that's there's precious little sci-fi coming out. The genere has been warped to sci-violence mostly. the powers that be are reluctant to make anything that's short on violence. Now that the technology exists to make believable looking effects, I'd like to see Arthur Clarke's Childhood's End made into a film. Maybe there's hope, CONTACT and GATTACA got made. But these two seem to be rare exceptions. Violence seems to rule! PITCH BLACK has the violence that is apparently so very marketable, but there's not much of a conclusion... Sure, the idea is novel, different, and somewhat unique, but it seems a dead end. I was amused by the film on it's unique aspects, but I was ultimately let down. So, a couple of people lived, including ole "evil eyes". What's the moral of this story? Does it even have one? Don't go out in space after dark, maybe? Deep, not!!! In the end, PITCH BLACK leaves me wanting, better writing. Best wishes! ------------------ Rachael, the big disc cat!
not a bad film but not a good film. 6 out of 10, vin diesel was good though. ------------------ Maybe i`ll go to the movies.....by myself!!!
Reply to Jay2000............ can't agree i thought pitch black on region 1 dts was superb.......awesome sound good story excellently acted and for once a good scary film buy now !!!!!
