which of these players is best for picture quality?
depends what your connecting it to. via hmdi or component.
pioneer if hdmi, denon if component.
The 868's HDMI can feed a DVI connection, so surely that is not really a distinguishing feature.
I found the 868 to be better on analogue and it also offers the digital option!
In terms of picture in side A/B comparison over component i preffred the 868.
I think that for compatibility the pioneer 868 is better than the denon?
What do you think?
I think compatibility is more of a HDMI thing so not relevant for the Denon (unless i've misunderstood your question!). It is also my opinion that the analogue output of the Denon is better than the analogue output of the Pioneer! However the Pioneer is the one to have if you will take advantage of iLink and HDMI.
