quick query - I see the new pioneers come with a similar media box to last generation.

I'm thinking of bypassing the media box and just linking everything though the amp i have my eye on and from there up to the screen with a hdmi/dvi cable. Does anyone know if this will work? Is there anything in the media box that actually affects the qaulity of the pictures sent through it?

    thanks for your help!

If you're thinking of the 435 or 436 then you have to go through the media box. Direct connection to the panel will not work.
The media box controls the screen and has the video processing onboard. This is not a disadvantage, you still only have one cable from the media box to the display. (it does have two connectors on each end though)
