If this is an older pioneer that is THX certified then i belive the following to be true, if i've got the numbers missed up then i'm sorry not sure about it.

I was looking into ones of these a while ago. It is ment to be good although it lacks DTS is only 5.1 and does not have multi-channel input so you can't use it as a power amp or with SACD/DVD-A.

If you can live with these short comings it might be worth buying, althoguh something newer but also second hand will probably serve you better in the long run if your gonna use any of the missing features/codecs, i.e. component switching/up conversion, automatic setup. Ment to have good build and does what it does very well but that was a few years ago so it might not still stand (should think that it does though).

Thanks for the reply... the amp I have now is a kenwood 5050(dd/dts) and is 100w x 5 ....I know it's only a "budget amp" but I think it sounds good... just wondering if the pioneer would blow it out of the water.. so to speak... I can sell kenwod for £70 to a mate who "just starting" and loves the amp anyway... is the pioneer worth it ?

£80 (after you get your £70) for what was near a flagship amp, it should blow it away. If you think it's worth the 'risk', the review i saw said that it made the sound move arround the room as if it was coming from the walls rather than the speakers!

As (i've read) it does not have multichannel input the best you could do is stereo from the source, if thats good enough then  but if not then you may have to look elsewhere, for the money it's good but if there are feature missing that you want or need then there is no point buying this and then upgrading later. So think about it, remember it is strait old stylee 5.1 DD and probably pro logic 1 so on the codec side it is lacking.
On the quaility of sound it produces in DD it's ment to be good, so if you would be happy with just that and no upgrade path then its right for you.

Used to own one. Very musical amp, great for movies too. Built like a starship. Output stages use ten transistors in differential mode for the five channels. There was a third-party aftermarket add-on for 5.1 input, dunno if it was DIY though. Would prob still cost a silly amount for it too even if still available. LD RF input but you may not care.

    HTH,
    Mike.

yeah might be, but does not decode dts! Spend a £150 more and you could get a lot newer pioneer model say 2011? Thats even better!

IMO, it's just about it's money for £150 as of early 2005 for the quality amps within and build/finish. What was the original rrp ? £1300 ? I wouldn't care about DTS inclusion personally. It's a class product. See what they've gone for on eBay recently and IIRC on our own classifieds not so long ago.

Ditto...I to used to own one...it's a whole lot of amp for £150. The way this decodes DD, you won't miss dts...I never use dts anyway...so the answer your looking for is yes, it's worth the money...
