DJ Pioneer Corp To Make Receivers For Plasma TVs-Nikkei <PIO.N>
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Pioneer Corp. (PIO or 6773), which plans to market plasma display panel televisions compatible with terrestrial digital broadcasting at the end of this year, intends to produce its own receivers for the TVs, according to Saturday morning's edition of The Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
The company currently makes plasma display panel TVs, but outsources production of receivers to Sharp Corp. (J.SRP or 6753).
Because analog broadcasting will eventually be replaced with digital broadcasting, Pioneer believes that it needs to acquire digital technology by producing receivers on its own.
Pioneer sold 50,000 plasma display panel TVs in Japan in fiscal 2002 and aims to double that figure in fiscal 2003.

DJ Pioneer To Merge 2 PDP Units To Improve Output Efficiency<6773.T><PIO.N>
TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Pioneer Corp. (PIO or 6773) said Tuesday that it will consolidate its two subsidiaries into a new unit on April 1 to improve its plasma display panel production efficiency.
The maker of high-end audio and visual equipment and car audio equipment hopes to address growing price competition in the rapidly expanding market for large flat PDP displays.
It will merge Shizuoka Pioneer Corp. and Pioneer Video Corp. into a new company dubbed Pioneer Display Products Corp.
The new company will soon begin construction of Pioneer's fourth PDP line in Yamanashi prefecture, west of Tokyo, Pioneer said.
Pioneer has two output lines with a combined annual capacity of 150,000, and a third line with an annual capacity of 100,000 scheduled to start operations from September 2003.
The fourth line will allow the company to produce another 250,000-300,000 PDPs a year in the spring of 2005.
With four lines running, Pioneer's PDP production capacity will exceed 500,000 a year.
Pioneer's investment in the first three lines will come to Y40.9 billion, with the fourth costing between Y26 billion and Y27 billion, the company said last year.

Hi, I think the press release is talking about a 4th production line rather than 4th gen technology - at least that's how I read it.

    thanks

Anyone buying a Pioneer 43" or 50" HDE model with the R03 Media Box in the last couple of months will potentially already have a Pioneer produced media box as Pioneer have taken production back in house and are not now using the Sharp sourced units.

The latest HDE units also come with a revised handset - its slimmer and heavier.

    Best regards

    Joe
