    Well since everyone appears to have started taking their deliveries, myself included we can start up the thread.

    I'll take some snaps later but I'm sure I'll get beaten to it, then its play time getting the settings right.

    So what is the recommended burn in for these sets.. I never did anything special last time I bought one (PDP-MXE503) but times have changed so it would be nice to make sure I get the best results.

    Ok, the screen is on the wall and connected up..

    It looks very nice (same as the other 8th gen stuff), has a bigger bezel than the 5th Gen unit I had before, but as its shiny black it gets away with it.

    I was able to use the same mounting kit as was on the 503 which has made things much easier, so it hooked up and swapped over with no problems at all.

    I have run new cables behind the wall, so I have some new Component and HDMI cables, plus I ran a DVI cable even though it doesnt take that, but I may use a converer.

    Initially couldn't get anything to display at all from any inputs, and we aborted and went to the pub accepting getting it out of the box and on the wall was an accomplishment in itself.

    Having got back slightly worse the wear for beer we played around and wasn't make any progress.. we then resorted to the manual and found out that we need to set each input up seperately rather than going in via one menu for all.

    The good news..

    EVERYTHING looks fecking fantastic. SKY HD, SKY SD, DVD upscaled to 1080p beautifully, I really cannot say now nice it looks. I always used to get lines on the Sky from the menus that ran off the end of the screen, these are gone now (probably the new cables).

    Not played much as I think I need a nap now from the beer, but the one thing that is bothering me is the how much noise this thing makes. It sits there buzzing really loudly, and depending on the resolution the frequency of the buzz changes... no idea why its doing it.. but its very noticeable.

    Anyway.. thats the initial report. loads more to do but I think I need to lay down a while :)

    Just back for ordering mine :)
    Expected in 2/3 weeks

    Anyone know if the PDK-TS25B Black Swivel stand fits the 508LX?

    Cheers

    I would hazard a guess it will. My wall mounted tilt bracket for the 5th generation works fine. The mounting points are all the same so I see no reason why not.

    I really hope it can accept the undermount speakers.

    I hate the look of the side ones

    Of course, I have a surround sound system.

    But dont want to use them for watching normal TV, its over kill.

    So I'll use 5.1 for films the the attached speaker for TV viewing

    Regarding the buzzing, have a look in the main 8G thread regarding the buzzing, were you doing it at night and if so did you have any LV lighting on?
    If you did try listening with it turned on and off an see if there is a difference, if thee isn't then it's the tv possibly, reason i say this is that i had this problem on my TV and various other things in the house including very slight picture interference and it turned out to be the LV lighting i had just got installed, removed the trannys and everythings fine.

    Hope this helps Neil!

    Matts info on the " buzzing " noise is interesting .. leconcepts say unit is silent as no fans !!

    Thinking of upgrading mu 5000EX ( which is near silent)but re-considering if this is a standard noise situation with this set .. any more out there who have received this set & can comment ?

    Hi Neil,

    Thanks for the headsup. I've spent some time head around various areas and i comes from the centre of the screen lights on, or off. As the display changes brightness and colours the buzzing changes tone, so its like its the transformer that powers the pixels.

    There is a computer near so I will shut that down to see if that makes a difference.

    I'll call Pioneer on Monday to see what they think.

    Happily, there appear to be zero failed or stuck pixels (that ive managed to stop so far) which is great.

    The remote control for this unit is very heavy for what it is.. I think its now the heaviest remote I have for anything.. can't understand why.. perhaps its a deliberate thing to make you think heavy=quality

    They've dropped their prices to match AVLand and considering it includes the stand / mount and shipping its a very good deal.

    My 508 makes a buzz like that. I think all plasmas do to be honest, as they use high voltage power sources, which make noise. The sound isn't too loud and is only audible on bright but quiet scenes. I'd wager that everybody's 508s make a sound too, just that for normal TV most people don't notice it.

    As the sound changes with overall brightness, I only ever really noticed when playing games. I guess because games often have large transitions from light to dark and my hearing is more sensitive to changes in sound (i.e. a change in amount of buzzing is more annoying that a constant buss that you can quickly ignore). I sit nearer the TV when playing games. I never hear the buzzing for normal TV from my normal viewing position.

    On the 508 at least, putting the TV to energy save mode 2 pretty much eliminates the buzzing sound under all conditions. So, if you find the buzzing a pain, try that.

    Cheers, I'll give it a whirl.

    I guess I am comparing to my 5th Gen which was silent, and things have moved on a bit since.

    My 428xd is very quiet. In order to hear any buzzing I need to, literaly, put my ear against the top of the bezel

    I'm not using any of the "energy saving" options.

    Good. As I said, for normal TV viewing, mine is silent too.

    Is the PQ of the LX508D that much better than the standard 508xd ? I've read from reviews that the 508xd offered the best PQ going prior to the full HD version coming out, so would be interested as to whether the difference is actually that significant. Also, does anyone know of any reviews on the full HD screen ?

    I've had these recommended settings sent over to me.. They seem to conflict with some published elsewhere on this site, so would welcome comments. I've set the mode and it seems a bit washed out to me, but perhaps its good for the burn in..

    So many settings and so many different peoples ideas..

    Set all inputs to AV Selection = Movie (Input1 ... Input5)

    PICTURE

    AV Selection = Movie
    Contrast=38
    Brightness=+3
    Colour=0
    Tint=0
    Sharpness=-2

    PRO ADJUST

    Pure Cinema = varies on device connected:

    Standard: for FreeView, Sky, Sky+ or Cable
    Smooth: for Sky HD, upscaling DVD Players/Amplifiers
    Advance: for HD DVD, Blu Ray Disc, Sony PS3

    Intelligent Mode : On

    Picture Detail
    DRE Picture Mid
    Black Level On
    ACL On
    Enhancer Mode = 2
    Gamma = 1

    Colour Detail
    Colour Temp = Mid-High
    CTI=On
    Colour Management = N/A
    Colour Space = 1

    Noise Reduction
    3DNR Mid
    Field NR Mid
    Block NR On
    Mosquito NR On

    Others
    3DYC Mid
    I-P Mode 2

    POWER CONTROL

    Energy Save = Save1

    OPTION

    Orbiter = On
    Drive Mode = varies on device connected

    1 = 75Hz Sport
    2 = 100Hz TV
    3 = 72Hz HD DVD, Blu Ray Disc, PS3, XBox360

    Room Light Sensor = On

    These settings will reduce the chance of image retention, aid longevity of the panel and give a more filmic appearance to your viewing.

    The number 0 on the remote will power up the screen to the last viewed image
    (useful fact for learning remotes.)

    Its hard to say really, I only ever just looked at the XD model as I never planned to buy that one and was just looking at the new black technology. This screen is simply the best thing I've ever seen, the colours and blacks are just like looking out a window at something, really really stunning, but I read similar comments about the XD. Clearly in true 1080p mode it will be slightly different, but I would be hard pressed to give you an honest view without having them next to each other and setup the same.

    Matt-UK, how far away from the TV do you sit ? - are you saying that you can hear the buzzing at normal volume levels ?.
    My Pana Plasma buzzes, though i can't hear the buzz at normal volume levels and i sit around 10 feet away.

    Settings wise cant comment yet but Matt having owned 5 different Pio sets I would say your settings would be bushing very cyan (Blue)

    Will be getting an LX soon, try the D65 for Sky HD.

    All the other enhancements need to be off, they really mess things up and I cant imagine it being amy different for these sets.

    But as I say that is only going from experience have not seen one yet.
