Hi. I'm ready to purchase my first plasma and have narrowed my search down to these two. I'll be using it for pretty much everything; Sky, Playstation, DVDs and occasional PC monitor. I can get them for about the same price. Which one would you choose and why?

    Hi Anfield

They are pretty much the same. The XDE has a digital tuner. Personally I am looking to buy the XDE, but I don't want to alter your decision.

I'm also going to get the XDE in a couple of weeks.

Where are you gonna buy the XDE from?

The cheapest i've seen it for is £2600.

I've been checking prices on pricerunner and there are some good deals. I am probably going to get it from av-sales as they have a very reasonable extended warranty. Some of the sites with cheaper prices have higher delivery costs and higher extended warranty packages. I am still hunting though as I am waiting for a look at and reviews of the new Panasonic VIERA TH-42PV500B (HD ready).

I am in exactly the same boat. Can anyone help here who really knows the difference? I emphasise the word 'difference' ; half the hi fi/tv mags say one is the best and the other isnt worth bothering with,, and the other half say the exact opposite. This is driving me nuts! These things cost serious money and I cant seem to trust anyone paid to review these tv's. Has anyone been able to actually see the 2 side by side? I would appreciate any input on this. :lease:

    Hi,

The main differences are the FDE has no digital tuner, no VGA (PC) Port and no PCMCIA slot for digital photos, Xde has a silver media box and a metalic remote control, fde has a black media box and plastic remote.

Tha panel/screen is the same on both models but the PQ on the FDE has been reported to be not as good as the XDE, which points to the media box processing.

I have the XDE and i would suggest you get that, im glad i got mine!

I bought a Vivanco tilt mount for £50 and it fitted perfectly and a bargain too!

If you can, go and have a test of the XDE.

I bought mine from TV and Video direct in Bolton for £2680 inc del 4 months ago, so maybe cheaper now.

    Good luck.

If the HDE has been offered to you and you are UK based, Liverpool I'd assume? Then the HDE is a euro import, FDE is UK model, and XDE, no HDE's are officially imported into UK.

Sorry, thought you mean't the FDE not HDE!

The 434HDE has been discontinued in the UK, 435XDE is the new replacement.

A few Currys stores still stock the 434HDE but for a rip off price!

No, the HDE has never been imported. The 434HDE was, of course, but that is now 8 months ago. I'd expect a serious discount off that.

Just a fan MAW, I live in West London.

That's interesting, didn't know HDEs were imports. Does that include the 434HDE or is that just the 435HDE?

EDIT: Sorry, I see you've just answered my question.

No problem with the Gee Gees for me, I can hear the roar of Sandown on a quiet day. 434HDE was the only model, now we have the 435 they do the FDE and the XDE. That happened 8 months ago. Hope that's clear, means 434HDE is 8 months old at least, 435HDE is a 'grey import' and is probably best avoided. It will by law have a warranty, but not the same level of service you can expect from a pukka pioneer UK product.

Since I was in the same boat late last week, and have now purchased my XDE [see my post on FDE vs. XDE], i'd absolutely get the XDE!

I went through the HDE, but as you said, they're around the same price - so the XDE just seems a much safer bet for me! Atleast you know you'll have full Pioneer UK support with it!

And I'd suggest AV-Sales too, although RGBDirect.co.uk have it cheaper [but think they charge a packet for any level of reasonable delivery]!

    Hope this helps!

    Not quite, but nearly ......

The panels are not entirely identical - as the older "4" series have glass screens, whereas the newer "5" series have some kind of plastic screen, which is supposed to be less reflective.

The older model is capable of 1 billion colours , while the newer one is capable of 7 billion colours.

The 434's panel (due to the glass), were a few kilo's heavier than the 435.

FDE and XDE use the same panel, just the media box and remote are different. There are quite a lot of differences 4 series to 5 series, some proper improvements in connectivity for instance. The shared inputs have been shifted around, so component and HDMI are no longer mutually exclusive without menu tweaking, shame HDMI is still shared with an RGB scart, but there you go.
