A letter from the Swiss importer of Pioneer:

In short: a new VSA-AX10 comes end of Nov 02 and spots WBT LS connections and FireWire (IE1394), no tuner for the European models and the DV-757AI is the player to match (with Fire-Wire connection).
No update will be offered to owners of the current VSA-AX10.

;) Hi, I was at the AV-Expo in Heathrow during the weekend and Pioneer had an upgraded VSA-AX10 with the IEEE 1394 connection. According to the product manager, it is guaranteed that a hardware upgrade will be available to current owners of the VSA-AX10 around £400. The newer version is due out around December this year. No other major changes is anticipated apart from the IEEE 1394 connection.

GBP400 for a FireWire connection and no other changes!?

Nuts - given that there is not much use for it since it's limited to audio only.
DVI-HDMI seems the only way forward to me - forget FireWire!
