Pioneer for the lot + Infinity Oreus 5.1 = well balanced ?

I am yet another newbie who has been reading the forums for a few weeks and finally decided to take the plunge !

I have bought a Pioneer 434HDE plasma and have Sky+ but am looking to buy the rest of the kit to make it home cinema. As I don't even own a DVD player at the moment not exactly sure what my viewing habits will be but I reckon say 90% Sky+ (drama, films, documentaries/news and football) and 10% DVDs

As I'd like to make use of HDMI (as the 434 has it and have heard lots of good reports about it) I was thinking about a Pioneer DVD player (I know other companies do make HDMI players eg. Arcam but they can be pricey). This led me to a Pioneer receiver and then I thought well I may as well go for a Pioneer DVD recorder as well!

    So with my existing:
    Pioneer 434HDE plasma (wall hung)
    Sky+
Video Recorder (not yet plugged in)

I am considering the following additions:
Pioneer DV-868AVi (connected to media box of 434 using HDMI) - £770
Pioneer VSX-AX5i (connected to DVD player using I-link) - £840
    Pioneer 5100 DVR/HD - £435
    Infinity Oreus (as a 5.1 setup) with 4 stands - £700

I'll obviously need to spend a bit on speaker cables, HDMI leads, etc + money for a cabinet but this is generally my budget
    (ie. about £3000)

Do you think this is a "well-balanced" system ?
    Any suggestions?

There is nothing wrong with that system and it (despite being a "one make") consists of mainly class leading bits. My gripe would be with the Oreus which to this set of ears is outperformed by the KEF egg, the upcoming Genie system from Mordaunt Short and the JM lab sib/cub pack as well.

But you wouldn't be disapointed with that list.

I'd add B&W's VM1's to that list as well....

Had considered the Kef Eggs as a mate of mine has them (and loves them) but the Infinity Oreus would fit better in the room (the other half prefers how they look !!). Haven't heard the Infinity Oreus yet but they seem to get good reviews (am trying to arrange a demo).

Didn't like the look of the Genie ones but haven't considered the JM lab sib/cub pack - will check that out - thanks

    B&W's VM1's look interesting too...

Another question which I forgot to add in the original thread was:
Do you think it's worth holding off and waiting to get a DVD recorder/player that has HDMI as I would have thought this would have been cheaper than buying two separate boxes?

Anyone have any ideas whether this is on the cards (in particular from Pioneer) and if so when? and if it will be any good as a player !?

Is there any particular reason why you need a DVD recorder when you have Sky+?

It's funny you should say that as a friend at work asked the very same question...

    a) have had Sky+ for a while and always seem to be at the 80-90% used mark so I could burn some stuff to DVD
    b) would like to transfer some old videos to DVD (I know the quality will be poor but then I can get rid of the VCR)
    c) I carry a laptop to work with a DVD player so could watch some shows on the very long commute I have

but any thoughts on whether I should wait for an HDMI recorder/player ?

Depending on time frame you might want to wait for the AX5i replacement the AX5ai due around October I believe. Also the HDMI Pioneer HD DVD recorder due out at the end of the year. You could always use a Pioneer 575 or 565 as a stop gap player.

No problems with choice of equipment, all top stuff, but agree that better speakers would be a good investment, Castle CC3 / Kef 5005.

Have recently just found the Kef 5005.
These look pretty nice but haven't found any official reviews of them. Also they don't seem to be mentioned much.
Have these been out a long time ?
    Are they any good ?

They are quite new, do a search here and you will get a few comments.

    Seem to be well liked.

Hi, I have a ax5i with 757 via inlink, and a infinity kappa setup.
    The sound is amazing.
I had kef q series and the change is like night and day.

    Go with infinity.

thanks for that will probably try to arrange a demo

I have started another thread to discuss my choice of speakers under Speakers entitled "Help Choosing Speakers !!" so if you have any comments about my choice of system (above) excluding speakers then post here otherwise comments on speakers should probably be posted to the other thread
