    Hi,

I buy this dvd-recorder this friday...
    I have a problem!
If I use HDD-DVD high speed copy with Verbatim DVD-R 8x the disc is unreadable... (I make 4 test)

All ok with sony and nashua dvd-r 8x

    Is this normal ?
Or I have to take back the dvd-recorder for another one?
I have some problem also with tdk dvd-r 8x, all ok with dvd-r 4x (many brand)

    Question:
can I limit the write speed to 4x ?
Exists a firmware that do this?
    or a hidden menu?

How did you obtain your Verbatim disks?
Did you buy them as individual disks in cases or on a spindle of about 25/50 disks.
The 2 types of disk have different dyes since they are made in different factories - the ones on a spindle have a lower quality dye (CMC I think) compared to the individual disks (MCC?)
I think Sony disks are MCC.

I also had problems with about 4 out of 50 Verbatim spindled discs.
I have switched to TDK spindles.
You can limit copying to 4x by buying only 4x discs

I have some problem also with a tdk dvd-r 8x disc...
No problem with sony, philips(fujifilm03) and nashua

Well this is 4x media code. so if your Verbatim was sold as 8x it could be fake, which would explain your failed burns.

Can you burn these disks properly in real-time as opposed to High Speed?

If you can then I would suspect that the media isn't as good as Verbatim let us believe.
Unfortunately I don't know of any way to slow down the burn speed on the Pioneers.I have the 420 and havn't tried to use Verbatim 8X disks - I'm currently using Ritek 4X disks with no problems either using High Speed or Real-time copying.

Yes, I can burn it in real time...
I can burn other dvd-r 8x in high speed copy

So I think that the problem are the verbatim dvd-r 8x
    :thumbsdow

Now I try Verbatim dvd-r 16x. The dvd-recorder don't see me as 8x so burn them at 4x.
    The disc is write correctly!!!

So I think that the quality of verbatim dvd-r 8x is poor
    :nono:

    Thanks

Thank you for posting these results. You have obviously spent some time testing and the information is very useful.

Yes thanks for posting your results. I will try some MCC02ORG20 discs that aren't Verbatim and see if they are ok in my 520.

BTW - how do you find out which firmware you have :lease:

Here are the instructions to get the firmware:

    Press "HOME MENU"
    Choose "Initial Setup"
    then "AUDIO OUT"
    Put "DIGITAL OUT" to "OFF"
    Press "RIGHT" button
    Then the "ANGLE" button

    NB
I don't "put digital out to off"... and it work

Please tell me your firmware version

    my firmware is:
    version: 2.64
    syscon: release_123
    tuflcon: 2.25M
    drive: 1.13W
    device: prism-plus
    region: 2

Burnt 2 MCC02ORG20 discs (both Datawrite silver printable). They both play back fine in the 520 and my Pioneer 575. However they both give read errors in my Liteon DVD-Rom using Nero CD-Speed, but read back fine in my Pioneer 107 DVD burner using Nero CD-Speed.

Not very conclusive I'm afraid - I guess that the failure in the DVD-Rom means that there may be playback problems in some DVD players.

    I have:

    version: 2.69
    syscon: release_146
    tuflcon: 2.25M
    drive: 1.16E
    device: prism-plus
    region: 2

Does anyone know if it's possible to download a firmware upgrade CD or is paying for it the only option? If I knew the update was worth it then I would buy it.

Yes but Compuman has a 520 and you have a 420, so how do you know you don't already have the latest firmware.
