I've had this dvd player for months now and I'm extremely happy with it, however, some time ago I rented the region 1 version of insomia (the new version) and it played in black and white.
is the film in black and white..? would I need some kind of upgrade, or some chabnge of setup on my dvd..?
just that I've ordered fear and loathing in las vegas R1 and I'd like to be able to play it thats all!

    cheers

Your TV sounds like it isn't NTSC compatible, but as you've got a pioneer DVD player you may have a switch at the back that will convert all outgoing signals to PAL.

Have a look, it'll probably be on the AUTO setting, just knock it over to PAL and you should be fine.

Let us know how you get on.

The setting for NTSC to PAL conversion may well be in the player's software setup menu,as it is on lots of other DVD players as well,if there is no external switching.

I've had a look on my 656 and I can find neither a switch on the back panel, nor any mention in the set-up menus. Anyone have any ideas for this specific player ??

To switch the 656a into PAL only mode rather than the default of AUTO (PAL or NTSC depending on the disk), you need to use a combination of the front panel buttons.

First switch the player to standby, then hold down the "forward" chapter button to change the setting.
You may need to repeat for each change you wish to make.

    It should cycle through AUTO->NTSC->PAL->
Obviously you want to select PAL.

If this is not clear take a look at page 20 of the manual.

Thanks mseabroo, tried that and yes it works, but it still won't record on VHS from NTSC so I think I'll need a format converter.

Ah yes or no as the case may be.
You wont be able to record an NTSC signal that has been converted to PAL.

The player actualy just does a format conversion of the signal but does not retime it. So what you end up with is a PAL encoded signal running at 60Hz rather than 50Hz.

A standard VHS machine will have trouble syncing to a 60Hz signal, so a full format conversion may be your only option.
May not be very cheap though. :(
