Pioneer UK website does not list this player but AVLAND are selling it  . Also can't find anyone else selling it. Has anyone seen reviews as Google/Yahoo doesn't throw up anything?

    Thanks

It's not available yet--so no reviews yet--but it's release is imminent. It's currently being offered on a pre-order basis.

If Pioneer's website is like most other CE company's, that will be the last place to look for info. I don't think the player is out until Sept/Oct time.

AV Land are not selling it.

How can they, it's not been released yet!

They often put stuff on their website months before its been released.

They are just being crafty, expecting you are part with your dosh.

Wait to place an order when its released, you will no doubt find other websites offering better prices.

Just look at the new Denon AVR1905. It was on their webiste first a few weeks ago, stocks have only arrived in the shops/web traders this week.

Now take a look around the web and see if AV Land can offer the best price now...

    Thanks for the replies.
I assumed AVLAND were selling it as there was an option to buy it, but I was also looking at the VSX-AX4Ai receiver which had no option to buy.

Looks like I'll wait till Sept/Oct then.

    Thanks

Arrival of the 989 has meant a significant price drop of the 868. This suits me fine. Have seen the 868 for £499.

I could be wrong but I think the Sharp LC45GD1E does.

It has the panel dimensions 1920x1080 and being an LCD I would assume it will take a progessive input at 1080p although the Sharp web site doesn't go into the specs in that much detail.

didn't realise it could take 1080p input, though it is just a 1080p panel. Thats one, POSSIBLY, useful killer feature then ;)

I've been in touch with Pioneer with this question:-

    "Hi.
I wonder if you could inform me if the new DV-989AVi-S DVD player will be able to output 720X480i(NTSC)/720X576i(PAL)as well as 720X480P(NTSC)/720X576P(PAL) resolutions via HDMI as the old DV-868AVi does?
    Thanks."
    Their reply just came through:-

    "Hi,

    Thanks for your email.

The outputted resolutions from the DV-989AVi are the same as the previous DV-868AVi unit, but the video processing has been improved.

When the DV-989AVi become available the user manual will be online;Regards.
    Customer Relations
    PIONEER GB LIMITED"

So it seems that the answer is "yes".

Yep great machine at that price...I grabbed one :) Not sure I would want to spend £799 on a dvd player at this point in time and how improved over the 868 the 989 will actually be. My guess is difference will be minimal, I mean how much more can they get out of DVD he says......

    I was lucky :D

ordered mine from Flat Deal.Com and its being delivered today, had to wait for stock to come from Pioneer though,
Not as cheap as £499 I paid £699 which is cheaper than the £999. that some people are trying to charge

The manual on mine says it outputs 1080i over HDMI, though I've yet to test it.

yep it does 1080i via HDMI, but i didnt think the image was as good as 720p but thats more than likely down to the fact that my PJ is 720p native.

1080i added a bit of pic noise.

Also the 989 is said to be out late september possibly early october.

No, 868 only outputs upscaled picture through HDMI-HDMI. I tried it.

if my plasma supports 1080i (via DVI), any diff in picture quality between the 868 & 989?

if the 868 upscale via HDMI, shdn't have a prob by using a DVI adaptor, I would presume.

No, if you don't connect it to a HDMI monitor, the HDMI doesn't go into effect in 868. Only if the player receives an HDMI compatible signal you can access to the HDMI menu in the player and change the upscaling options. I connected it to a DVI monitor and tried it. The player works but no upscaling. And you cannot watch DVD's with HDMI>DVI cables or adaptors. You can only check the players main menu. The player doesn't output DVD material (copyrighted) off the HDMI output if it's connected to a DVI input. Sorry.

    Hi iBug

if I'm assuming that the 868 is our equivalent of 969... the manual says the HDMI supports DVI too, and when plugged into DVI will show the HDMI menu without the audio option and it should work. You might want to check the menu (page 73/74 for the 969 version).

    hope it helps and works.

It probably won't upscale unless connected to an HDCP display; iBug did your DVI display support HDCP? (HDMI always supports HDCP but DVI needn't)

I second that. The DVI display needs to be HDCP compiant. Then all upscaling features of the 868 work via HDMI - DVI. Works fine on my NEC 42VR5 plasma with HDCP compliant DVI input.
