My 717 plays VCD's okay, however I cannot chapter jump.
The front display shows the disc as a vcd.

Just pop it in and play. The machine will read that it's VCD. It won't chapter jump and if you fast forward it has a tendency to go back to the start.

An MPEG2 VCD is more properly referred to as an S-VCD. And, according to www.dvdrhelp.com , the 717 is not compatible with SVCDs.

I've used a 717 for the last 5 years and I can guarantee it plays S-VCD's.
