Working on a new surround DVD system.

    My budget is £500-600

I have come up with the following options.

    Option 1:
    Pioneer DV565
    Pioneer VSXC301
    Pioneer SV50

    Option 2:
    Pioneer DV464
    Pioneer VSXC501
    Pioneer SV50

    Option 3:
Come up with a different make system for the price.

Don't like the 565 as it doesn't do PAL. (otherwise I would have already got it)
Don't have budget for 565 with 501. (would end up with no money for speakers)
Yes I would prefer a slim style result.

My current AV equipment is JVC.

    Any comments / thoughts appreciated.

Haven't seen 464 in action, but the 565 is incredible for the price. I maybe wrong, but I don't think the 464 plays DVD-A/SACD disc, if that matters to you, whereas the 565 does.

Also, both machines do Pal, in that they output a Pal signal. What I think you mean is Pal progressive scan. The 565 doesn't handle this, only NTSC, but then the 464 handles neither.

If DVD-A or SACD is on your list of must haves, then the VSXC301 is out as it doesn't have the analogue inputs required (it will still play the DVD-A 5.1 though). The C501 is also 6.1 if this is important for future upgrades. Additionally it comes with the auto setup microphone thingy.

The 565 deserves it's good reputation, and it's component output (PAL) is excellent. Progressive (NTSC) is handled very well, and is one good reason to get R1 discs.

    I'd recommend the following

    565 DVD
    VSX-C501 if DVD-A/SACD required, VSX-C301 if not.

I've not tried the Pioneer speakers so can't comment on those.

Getting the C501 would put you £20 or so over your £600 limit. If you went for the C301 you'd stay within budget.

    Thanks.

My 3rd option would be :
    JVC XV-NA77
    JVC RX-ES1

Though still trying to find out if one can buy the rx-es1 on its own.
