I have a chance to buy this at a good price but no opportunity to demo it first.

Also, how will it cope with 4 ohm front speakers?

Anybody have one who can comment on it please?

I take it you mean the ax5ai-s.
I have one and for 2 channel duties it has replaced a Rotel RC972/RB971 pre/power combo which I was very happy with. (needed to downsize to fewer boxes though!)
I am very pleased with the Pio for 2 channel and would say that in direct mode I have made an improvement in sound quality over the Rotel stuff.
Using analogue connections I have a MF X-ray CD Player and a Rega P3/MF X-LPS phono stage connected.
I prefer cds this way. I have tried the cd player connected digitally and also cds in my 757ai via i-link, but neither is as nice as using the x-ray's dacs.
SACD & dvd-a both sound fantastic using the i-link connection (surround & 2-channel).
I bought the amp without hearing it; I knew it would be a massive improvement on what I had for film/surround duties. I was hoping that it least it wouldn't sound worse for stereo listening. The improvement I got for 2-channel music was a pleasant bonus.

I've my Celestion SL-6Si connected to AX-5Ai as 2-ch + 5.1. Sounds great and it's enough power to drive SL-6Si. A bit bright compare to Audiolab 8000 C+P but just a sense of "modern sound".

The DAC in AX-5Ai, however, is quite disappointing compare to the analog input direct from Denon 3910.

Mains are Tannoy 638s (Large floorstanders from about 10 years ago).

    Centre is a Tannoy 623.

    Rears are Tannoy MXRs.

No Sub at present although I'm very tempted to try a BK XLS200.
