See link here for the expected release date for the updated pioneer dvd player and its price.
Looks like its going to be set at £799 which isn't too bad considering the spec. and expected release is 28/08/05

    http://www.leconcepts.com/dvd_home.htm

    Heres a whish list for,

Finally a pioneer dec with sorted CUE errors.
    Minimal if no layerchange.

Is that too much to ask for??

EDIT: HCC has a review of the 989 in its latest mag. Scores very high for both video and sound. Evidently it has breath taking clarity, and screams fidelity with sound. Its a good review with 5 stars across the board

    Interesting.

Does that mean web prices of around £600? I was about to go hunting for an end of the line 868, but if it's only £100 more, I can wait!

no web price is £799. Leconcepts tend to be one of the cheapest, so i doubt anyone else will beat that, but heres to hoping

I see the 989 now has true 10bit processing as well

I don't know if it should go on a wish list but it was on their previous player: output of 576i over HDMI (so you can feed it into a receiver in future that will scale, or into a video processor). The leconcepts features show the HDMI port being associated with Trex - which is described as supporting 576p.
Its a shame if they've taken 576i off.

No layer change would be good too :)

If you look also to the 868 blurb it dosent mention interlaced via HDMI either(and this has the trex scaler as well).

My guess it will still do interlaced via HDMI so i wouldnt panic yet

How will the 989AVI compared to the Marantz 9500 in picture & sound quality (excluding CD/SACD/DVD-A)?

    probaly about the same
The marantz may sound better with music but if you can take advantage of the firewire output then it will probaly be close.Film stuff dead heat.
Pic wise i would lean to the 868i so if the 989 is an improvment then i would take that if it were me. the marantz 9600(soon to come) and 989i will probaly be as good as each other, with pros and cons. If pioneer keep the Interlaced output via HDMI then this would be a huge plus.

I like the audio side of the 9500 but didnt like the pic quality as much as some others.

Yeah it is looking good though we will not know until one of us has one, but knowing pioneer have always made some advancement with there top line products its reasonably safe to think this will be an improvement over the 868i.

Maybe they'll continue the 668 in their line-up, or, drop it, and continue the 868 - effectively taking over the place of the 668 - perhaps with a price adjustment??

    Hello all

AML - from sliding forward the blade on my Stanley knife and inserting it into a Pioneer DVD player box to cut the seal on the box to having a fully working MR player takes about 40 secs and I've never had one fail yet.

    Best regards

    Joe
