Looking for DVD player to complement new pio 506XDE.

Has anyone seen the 989 in the flesh yet? Picture Quality?? CD playback??

Any of our Retailer/ISF chappies had a chance to compare it with the likes of the Arcam DV79?

    Cheers
    Billy

they are in limited number only as there are many on preorder. If you go into a shop and get one straight off the shelf you will have done very well

too early to say, but i hear they are a tad better than the arcam for pic via HDMI. Sound wise if you can make use of i-link then its as good as the arcam dv79 as it seems pioneer has made a bit more effort with the soundstage of the 989, but perhaps not as good as the dv29 maybe. Plays sacd as well if thats of any use to you

I heard the same about the picture quality. But I'd still like a decent bit of CD playback quality.

The HCC review gave it a solid review for both picture and sound quality

    Heres a quote
"sound quality is very good too. Movie soundtracks are delivered with precision and sterling dynamics, but its with SACD and DVD-A and humble CD playback that the 989avi shines through. The expressiveness of its upper frequencies screams FIDELITY with every note; the creation of 5.1 soundstage is achieved with seamless and gorgeous precision; bass is rich and rounded but utterly controlled; and the mid range is perfectly balanced."

So i would say it does not sound bad then :)

for pic it says somthing about breathtaking clarity!! :smashin:

Hi everybody, my first post !

Interested by a black version of the 989 ?
Do like me send a request to Pioneer UK and/Or Europe for the black finish. If many people do like me, maybe Pioneer will accept to provide the European market with black units !

Sadly I read it in WHSmiths at the train station so I'm trying to remember. Here is what I can remember.

I know it got 5 stars out of 5 stars for PICTURE, SOUND, FEATURES, OVERALL but 4 stars for VALUE.

They said that £800 was alot to pay for a DVD player in these times before HD and when there are £30 players out there...

They didn't go into the sound quality much, saying that it deserved a review on it's own  Weird!

However, they did say that the picture was one of the best they had seen and it was all great news. They said something like "...it is the best picture provider we've seen..." or something like that. Super sharpness, great colours, great detail, great 3D imaging, great black level, no player induced grain, no player induced artifacts, no bad stuff at all in fact!...

Sounds like an awesome player, but I wish they had gone into more detail (especially with regard to the sound quality and any improvements over the 868 - which I currently have).

All in all... I'm getting more and more excited about this player even though I love my 868!

    Martin, great stuff.

That kinda reads in line with what i have seen elsewhere.

Stock is going to be the problem. It was the same with the 868i at first.

I might buy an 868 and get it modded internally.....or i could just plump for a 989. Either way it will be modded internally with Trichord mods, updated dacs, output stages and better capacitors....Pioneers respond very very well to hotrodding.

Personally i would take all magazine reviews with a huge pinch of salt, not saying they're crooked but from first hand experience of products which have been given 5/5 and 10/10 etc i can tell you there are a few fibs going around in the magazine industry ( my own personal opinion so if someone works for a magazine don't take offence ) trust your own judgement but the thing is when people read these reviews and then spend all that money and actually buy the product the brain tends to do anything to justify the item you have bought and people often psychologically believe the hype and get caught up in it and then they tell us all how x item which costs £800 is so much better in every way than x item which cost £500 but in reality differences are probably extremely small to the naked eye and to our own hearing capabilities.

Having said all that i'm sure the Pioneer is a great player but is it worth £800 ?

True, but then when you look to the owner reviews that are starting to filter through i think you will soon realize this is not hype this time. The audio section HAS been improved no end, the image quality has also improved, with one owner stating its better than his onkyo sp1000, which if true is amazing considering that costs £2500 and its pQ is considered second by some to the Denon A1xv.
There is also a flip side that sometimes magazine reviews are in fact correct in there opinion. Somtimes :D

If you'd like to see 989 you can come to Prague (Czech Rep.) and besides drinking visit Basys shop at Andel :D

They have it on display connected to 615. Overall it looks really great. (Finding Nemo was on). I would not like to cause any panic here, but my impression was that I still can see the chroma problem (don't know which flavour this is - ICP?). Basically, on diagonal lines (in some scenes) you could see blue pixels of water cutting INTO orange body of Nemo. (my girlfriend was with me and when I showed her she confirmed she sees that too but you would not notice unless really searching for it). As I said overall the 989 picture on 615 looks great and you have couple of people watching all the time.

Has anyone else seen Nemo on 989??? (Nemo is probably tough test for chroma, the sales guys should better put on Lord of Rings and be safe ;)

I just got my 97AVi a few days ago and I have watched a couple of DVDs including The Incredibles although I have not watched Nemo on it yet. I could not see any chroma problems... this is on a Samsung HLP5685W (Kirk model) via HDMI at 720p with the video set to "Natural" (default is "Direct").

The sound when playing CDs is as good as my dedicated Sony CDP-x779ES CD Player. I had it set to "Pure Audio" when playing music CDs. In this mode, all unnecessary digital circuits are off including the display which only turns on briefly after each track change. Music had 3D imaging with excellent punch and dynamics. Transport is not as refined as that of my dedicated CD player though... by this I mean the quality of the disc tray (uses cheap plastic) and the smoothness of loading and ejecting discs.

Could someone explain to me if i could run the picture from DV-989s HDMI to the plasmas HDMI and the sound from i-link from DV-989 to the amp
    (Pioneer VSA-AX10i) i-link?

PS: sorry for my bad englsih

I believe you certainly can. I myself am using the unit's analog 5.1 channels when watching DVDs... It still outputs audio signals to HDMI but all I had to do was set the HDTV's volume to 0 so it won't interfere with the 5.1 sound coming out of the analog 5.1 channels.

For Audio CD listening, I am using the unit's 2ch Audio jacks connected directly to my Pre Amp... this is in addition to the analog 5.1 channels.

I am not using Ilink as I don't have a Pioneer Receiver.
