My Pioneer 989 keeps dropping the iLink connection to my Pioneer VSAX10i amplifier while playing CDs. Instead of the blue iLink lights on both units I get a flashing "Link check" reading on both units. Unplugging and resiting the iLink cable (which is just a cheap no-brand 4m firewire cable) fixes the problem, but not permanently.

Any ideas? Would a shorter cable help, or is this likely to just be a fault in the 989's iLInk port driver? I haven't watched a DVD with this setup yet (The amp is a new arrival, and is in fact going head to head with a Sony 7100, which I will pick up this week to see which, if either gets kept).

Thanks in advance for any help.

    MF

It was the cable, it seems.

Superb DVD-V player. Good digital audio transport. I'm listening right now to SACDs over the iLink to the Pio VsAX10, and it's gorgeous. CD replay on the same system is nothing special, but that's the fault of the amp. I haven't tried DVD-A yet.

As the owner of one of these superb receivers I would appreciate any opinions that you may have after comparing the Pioneer with one. I would expect the Sony to be clearly superior for music.

I'll definitely pop over to the 7100 thread when I've got the receiver, Oblomov.

My first reaction is that, other than in terms of scale and power, the Sony does indeed wipe the floor with the Pioneer.

Thanks for confirming my belief. Are you going to keep the Sony?

Sorry for the long delay in replying - yes, in the end I did keep it and sold the Pio.
