The Pioneer website seems to show very little difference between these players.

The only differences I can spot are (on the 868), i-link, Hi-Bit conversion, and Legato Link (none of which I can envisage using).

The 868 lists something called "Two-Dimensional Resolution Expander Videoscaler" - anyone know what this actually does? Is it worth the extra money?

    Edit -

apologies, just found an earlier thread on this.

In my opinion yes. The 868 is worth the extra money. Please visit the relevant threads in this forum. It will help. My input is that I saw them both with component input the other night plus the 757 player. Both the 868 and 757 gave a better picture than the 668 on the 434 plasma

A review of 668 appeared on a German site yesterday. The guy was saying, regarding pq and sharpness he has never ever seen such a player... A more thorough test with HDMI will follow, we'll see.

Although I have more trust on the review of Costas I think the price difference might not be justified. For me anyhow, me never going to pay that kind of money (800 pounds for 868) on a dvd player (unless it is HDTV) :smoke:

    "Two-Dimensional Resolution Expander Videoscaler"

    The 868 has a T-Rex scaler that can upscale DVD's to 720p or 1080i. The 868 also has a 14bit video DAC whereas the 668 is 12bit.

Is the upscaled output only available on HDMI, or is it available on the component output as well?

Only from the HDMI, I'm afraid. If you require 720p or 1080i from component, you could try the Momitsu/Brainwave players.

They're available now from Hi-Fi City.
You will have to be quick though as they only had about 15 left yesterday when I spoke to them.

P.S. Please don't take the comments above as implicit instructions that you should or should not purchase a cable from HFC at the price they are selling it for. The decision is solely yours to make...;)
