After a year of using the Pioneer in 5.1 mode, finally dug out an old set of Gales and wired them into the rear channel outputs.

I've set up the amp according to the manual, run the test and the speakers work perfectly.

However, I can't get them working with DVDs! The DVD player is a Pioneer DV626D - old, but still working fine.

I ran the THX optimisation on an R1 Monsters Inc, and although the box says it's in Dolby Digital EX, when running through the test signals, it routes the centre rear through the surround left/right!? Watching the film did the same thing. The same thing appeared to happen with Gladiator in DTS-ES too - no sound from the centre rear, just appeared to be in 5.1.

Is this likely to be something to do with the DVD player - it's got a built in DD/DTS encoder, but 5.1 only. I can't seem to find a way of switching them off, either.

The two are connected with a Digital Coax.

Any ideas, cos it's doing my nut in!
