I understand that the Marantz DV-8400 is based on the Pioneer 757, at least as far as the video section goes (though with an all new audio section).

I have a 757 and am considering upgrading to the 8400 for better audio performance. I can't compare the two units side by side, so my question is will there be an improvement in video performance with the 8400? Are they totally identical in the video stage (same dac, deinterlacer etc) or has Marantz improved upon the Pioneer unit?

I am keen for the improved audio of the 8400 but don't really want to shell out big bucks if it means identical video performance.

    Thanks.

Well the 8400 has a DVI out that will surely affect some kind of difference to a compatible video monitor. It is a perfectly capable video source (although overshadowed by the DV12) but as you say mainly offers audio improvements over the 757. Beautifully built too.

Yeah, the 8400 does look good and it's build quality is great.

Unfortunately my tv doesn't have dvi-in so I'd be stuck with component. Given that, do you think the 8400 offers a video improvement over the 757?

Possibly a small one in that the 8400 had PAL PS from the outset whilst the 757 had it tacked on (for want of a better word). I am not a very discerning DVD user, this whole chroma and CUE thing has passed me by entirely but in my experience, the 8400 is a fine DVD player but no better picture wise than many cheaper units- you're paying for the sound.

Would an Arcam Dv27 Suit better in Video and Audio?

Or even the new and cheaper DV79?

    Only thoughts...

Hasn't the Marantz been sprinkled with Jar-Jar Binks dust by the bods at Skywalker Ranch? If so, then the video section will have been tinkered with, though this may not mean it will be improved, just different.

If that charming phrase really means "is it THX select?" then the answer is yes.

I bought a DV8400 last year and have been very pleased with both video and sound performance.
With regards to the PAL progressive, please note this is only available via the DVI-D output as apparently the R&D team weren't mad about using something designed for NTSC on our PAL system.
I spoke to Neil Gill at Marantz UK who was one of the technicians on the player who confirmed this, i kept the number in case of any future technical queries, 01753-680868.
Unbeatable.co.uk had it at £999 last time i looked.
If you are looking to improve CD sound quality i would always recommend a CD player or transport though as the picture quality of even budget DVD players are excellent now.

Are you sure PAL progressive is only available via DVI and not via component on the dv8400? If so, that would be a deal breaker.

It would seem strange to me to not implement PAL progressive, given that it clearly produces better picture quality and obviously wouldn't be difficult (given that the Pioneer has it).

I only have component inputs and would like the PAL progressive capability.

    Yes.
That's why i contacted Marantz in the first place.
I run the player using component out into my plasma and the picture is great but if you feel the need to have PAL progressive now then maybe one of the Arcam players, which are supposed to be good with music also.
I bought the player as it plays everything and also has the DVI-D which i will need for my next plasma/projector.

    Bails,
    5.20AM !!! Are you a milkman?
From what i remember, Neil said PAL progressive was only activated through the DVI-D output as the standard picture through component was better.
Whether there is a way round it now...i would check with him.
