I'm looking at buying a new dvd player as I'm going to buy a Panasonic TH-42PHD7 in the new year. I've narrowed my choices down to these 3 players but can't decide on which one to go for. At this time I'm not too fussed about HDMI that will probably come later. I may eventually get a scaler but for now it will just be the player. I will also be buying a Denon 3805 amp.

Having read all the threads on here for weeks on end and the various problems etc I still can't make my choice. I've seen the 757 for under £400 and the 2910 for under £500.

It seems that none of the players are perfect - the 2910 with it's macroblocking issue and the Pioneers with the chroma bug. So can people give me their opinions on which player they'd go for and why?

Yeah I've been thinking along these lines I'm going for the Optima RD50 DLP rear projector and these players have come up on the short list.

I know that the Denon's have gotten a slating on here but have there firmware bugs started to be resolved yet?

Also are there any other players with a DVI or HDMI O/P that should be on the short list?

668 and 757 are getting on a bit now, if the Panny has a DVI-D or HDMI input then the 668 or the 2910 would be good buys.

If you are going to get a scaler later, then I'd opt for the 668, I have one currently, and it has given me sterling service. Beware of poorly produced discs though, it is kinda ruthless with discs that have been produced badly.

I think the Pioneer 757 is a cracking player and a bargain for the price, also you have the ilink which can be an all in one solution for SACD/DVD-A & DD/DTS i don't regret purchaseing it, if you can do without HDMI then the Component is very good.
For an allround player great value

Don't get me wrong, I think the 757 is also a cracking DVD player, but does suffer from chroma bug, the 668 suffers a lot less from the chroma bug while its pictures aren't quite as detailed as the 757's, when I say quite, I'm talking miniscule decimal point percentages here :).

All in all, if you want ilink, the 757 is a great buy. Otherwise, I'd recommend the 668 with its newer software over the 757 and with its HDMI output. I personally think the Pioneers look better than the Denons too.

Can't really go wrong with either of those players to be honest, all depends on how you want to connect them to your display.

For now the connection will be by component, I may go down the hdmi route in the future but not yet. Will scalers be adding hdmi outputs at some point? As for I link I don't think I can connect via I link to the 3805 amp though can I?

Is the 668 not a new player then? I assumed it was with it having an HDMI connection.

    Hi,

I think the 668 has been out for around a year, to match the 434 and 504HDE plasmas.

I don't know of any scalers with HDMI outputs, but there are a few with equivalent DVI-HDCP including Lumagens and iScan HD models. Unfortunately the 668 doesn't feature iLink - you would need the 868 or 757 for that. Hope this helps.

No the 3805 does not have ilink inputs - only Denonlink.

I saw that much of the cost of the 757 was because it was the first dvd player to feature I link. Does that mean corners were cut elsewhere or is it still damn good. Of the 757 and Denon 2910 which produces a better picture via component?

    NikB,

I would say that a 757 for under £400 was an absolute bargain. :smashin: I have one modded for SDI through my Lumagen and then outputting at 1080p to my plasma and I'm very happy - well, I will be until Blu-ray is released in a year or two! Hope this helps.

Thanks, I've pretty much decided on the 757 now. Someone else is trying to get me to look at a Pioneer AX5i over the Denon 3805 but is it really worth £300 more?

Nik i don't know if the Denon can use the ILink as they only have the Denon Link which i think is Cat 5 cable, so then you will not be able to use the feature of ilink on the 757i.

What about a Pioneer 2014 for the amp (similar to the AX5 and has i-link).

I just bought the 757ai to go with the above amp and ilink is well worth the extra...

Does the 2014 replace the AX3 do you know?

But am I really missing out if I can't use Ilink? I'm really not bothered about DVD-A and SACD so there isn't really an issue is there? Is the coaxial digital output going to be any worse for sound than the ilink connection?

The 2014 is better specced than the AX3 (is a direct replacement for the 2011, which I had previously). I paid £650 for mine, after selling the 2011 for £500 on ebay.

ilink is definitely better for stereo - but you're right there isn't much improvement with DD or DTS.

Cheers folks. Think I will go with the 757 and the Denon 3805, the money I save between the 3805 and the VSX-AX5Ai will eventually go towards a Lumagen processor most likely.
