I am getting close to buying my Toshiba 42PW16 Plasma panel and am looking to get a decent DVD player which doesn't have any firmware issues, chroma problems etc etc.

I need the player to have Component Prog Scan output in NTSC & PAL.

Originally, I was just going to get the Denon MKII as it has supposed to have resolved the Chroma problem, however whilst in my local A/V specialist today enquring if the MKII was out, he said yep and it has issues with lip sync on the Plasma panels.

He also said that this has been resolved (firemware I guess)

Apparently he steers his clients towards the Pioneer 747 with Plasma if they dont have their own preferences.........

So, I guess it's between these two for me...unless anyone else has any suggestions. Appaently the Techtronics multi-region mod enables PAL prog. scan output over the base products NTSC only. (?)

If you do go for the 747 I wouldn't recommend techtronics...search for all the threads on problems...

hmm.. another of those dealers that want you to buy a specific player..
(someone else posted recently that they were told that Denon players didnt work well with Panasonic plasma screens).

the Pioneer (and their european progressive models) arent meant to be that good at progscan anyway..
nice it has SACD & DVD-A but thats not what you want it for.
its pal progressive features are a bit of an unknown - IMHO better to stick with somethink
with a known chipset like the Sil or Faroudja, and a player you
know you will get firmware updates on if needed.

his comments about the Denon are odd though...
the Denon 2800 mkII is really too new to know anything concrete yet...
certainly no word of lipsync problems.

there were lipsync problems with the original 2800 but on some R2/pal prog only.
this was mentioned on these very forums so dont be surprised if your A/V specialist
actually got this info from here and has "his wires crossed"... the old model only.

since no-one has tried the region free pal progressive firmware for the 2800 mkII,
his info cant really be considered accurate.

no matter what though, the Denon 2800 mkII will have the chroma bug...
not too bad though and better than the original was.

the Denon 3800 should be better on the chroma issue but more $$$.

the Harmon Kardon dvd 25 is only promising until the much rumoured pal progressive comes out.. (if ever).
cheap at less than £275 though and no chroma bug at all.

I'd say your current best bets are the Philips 963 and q50 imported
    - no chroma bug and excellent ntsc and pal progressive scan with the Faroudja chipset.
