Do any of you guys have a Pioneer 717 hooked up to an external DAC for stereo replay, If so what are your thoughts on it, I'm thinking of purchasing a Musical Fidelity X-24K DAC to improve stereo sound.

Did you see about two years ago a review of almost the exact same set up as what you are thinking of in HiFi Choice?
They liked it. In fact, they thought it was great!
If it's available, you'll find more info on it at www.hifichoice.co.uk
If needs be, I can scan and send as e-mail that review for you. However, it may take a while to find in my back copies. :)

Excellent - I have HFC back to June 98 I have the reviews (first tests in HFC & WHF) of the 717 but no mention of a hook-up to the X-24K, WHF also mentioned this a while back but it all seems to have gone quiet on the DAC front from both mags - funny though great potential for DVD upgrades. I would be grateful if you would send me the article or give me the issue number. As an aside I've purchased a 'DAD' Daves True Story - Chesky (original DVD-A - 2 channel 24/96 stereo DVD from Vivante) and the sound is the absolute kahoonas - I was blown away. I'm looking forward to these future DVD-A discs having 24/96 stereo playable on existing DVD-V players. Thanks for your reply fella.

Found that review - nice one, I thought the X-DAC was the only one in there. Cheers bud.

    No problem.
I'd thought about all that malarky when it was around.
Offboard DAC's went out of favour due to clock error problems and so on.
I know they are still around, but small scale.
I'm sure though that if you plonk one on your gear it will leap forward in sound quality. Have fun finding out.
