After reading a lot of positive reviews, I recently got myself a Pioneer 575a.

I have to say, I'm delighted with the player. The picture quality is fantastic, and the menus are nice, and the chapter skipping is the fastest I've ever seen.

But when I read through the manual, I was shocked to learn that it doesn't play mp3s! I would have thought more people would have cared about this but I've never even heard anyone mention it.

As a music player, this omission makes 575a totally useless to me, since I don't use audio CDs, only mp3s.

I guess my only choice is to still keep my old DVD player under the TV for when I want to play music, but I really hate clutter!

Or... does anyone know of any firmware/hack etc. to get mp3s working? It will play cbr mp3s, but that's all.

The 575 can play both MP3's and WMA off CD-R or DVD-R/+R.

Same here, I have the next model down (the DV470) and it plays mp3 files from either cdr or dvdr fine.

The manual also says it doesn't read DVD+RW but guess what...they work just fine :)

    I have DVD+RW with mp3 and it copes 100% OK !

    S**t!

    How simultaneously annoying and pleasing!

How dare the manual say it won't play stuff, when it actually will! Crazy!

Maybe I pay too much attention to manuals? But I can't help wonder how many people took the manual's word for it and don't know they can play mp3s on it?

Well, the manual actually states that you CAN play MP3 files in a number
of places so I don't know what manual you have been reading.
But the manual is overly cautious and only promises to play CBR MP3 on
CD-R/RWs but it turns out it works fine with VBR MP3s and on DVD-R/RWs too.
