Pioneer 545 or 646?

    Is there a difference between the 545 and 646, other than DVD-A.

    I have been waiting for the Toshiba 510, but have started thinking about the Pioneer 646.

    But in Hifi Choice this month, they compare the audio capabilities of the current DVD-A and SACD players.

    The 646, didn't do to well as an audio player and they didn't mention anything about its video performance.

    Since the future of DVD-A is still not a certaintly, I have started to question the point of paying an extra £200 for the 646 when I don't even know if I want/need DVD-A... And I could get a 545 now.

    Does anyone have any info about these 2 players?

    Well, the 646 has a Dolby Digital decoder. Apart from that, the video and audio quality should be the same.

    Your situation is exactly like mine a month ago. DVD-A is a cool idea, but until the record companies begin to support it, it's just another Betamax for me. Ask me in two years' time and we'll see... <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

    Anyway, I bought the 545. It's a killer machine. And the remote is the same as that of the 646 - really useful.

    Hi Grubert,

    Iv'e got the DV-545 also, agree that its an excellent machine, apart from one small problem..........<br />When using RGB output i'm getting feint horizontal drifting lines on the screen (can only notice it on dark scenes)<br />Just interested to see if you've noticed it with yours?? <br />Where you get your player from anyway?? Is it chipped?

    I haven't noticed any bands, even though some of the movies were very dark (Dark City, e.g.).

    I got my player from <a href="http://www.dvdupgrades.ch" target="_blank">DVD Upgrades</a>. They are the real McCoys! Other dealers just use DVD Upgrades' technology (with their permission or not).
