Is there a difference between the 545 and 646, other than DVD-A.

I have been waiting for the Toshiba 510, but have started thinking about the Pioneer 646.

But in Hifi Choice this month, they compare the audio capabilities of the current DVD-A and SACD players.

The 646, didn't do to well as an audio player and they didn't mention anything about its video performance.

Since the future of DVD-A is still not a certaintly, I have started to question the point of paying an extra £200 for the 646 when I don't even know if I want/need DVD-A... And I could get a 545 now.

Does anyone have any info about these 2 players?

Well, the 646 has a Dolby Digital decoder. Apart from that, the video and audio quality should be the same.

Your situation is exactly like mine a month ago. DVD-A is a cool idea, but until the record companies begin to support it, it's just another Betamax for me. Ask me in two years' time and we'll see...

Anyway, I bought the 545. It's a killer machine. And the remote is the same as that of the 646 - really useful.

    Any questions?

    Hi Grubert,

Iv'e got the DV-545 also, agree that its an excellent machine, apart from one small problem..........
When using RGB output i'm getting feint horizontal drifting lines on the screen (can only notice it on dark scenes)
Just interested to see if you've noticed it with yours??
Where you get your player from anyway?? Is it chipped?

    Garry,

I haven't noticed any bands, even though some of the movies were very dark (Dark City, e.g.).

I got my player from DVD Upgrades. They are the real McCoys! Other dealers just use DVD Upgrades' technology (with their permission or not).
