Q) I know you can add them in editing which is ok but isnt there a way
of just saying , chapter points every 10 mins and let it do the rest ?

thanks

You cannot get automatic (i.e. 10, 15 min) chapter points into an SP or better recording. You always get the ones you set on the HDD.
In LP you cannot copy the ones you set and you always get the fixed interval ones (frequency set in Initial set-up).
Note that LP and SP etc are recordings in the LP and SP mode bands on p116 of manual - LP: 1-11, SP 12-32, not just the default LP and SP settings

thanks edd

so if i have a 2hr + vid e.g. film , i can copy it at just less than SP
and it will auto put in the chapters ?

when you say SP / LP - theres quite a no. of options on the 530 , mustg be about 8 levels of quality

i'm ignoring the "better than dvd" option as backing it up isnt possible

thanks

Yes.
If you change modes to make the copy then it occurs in 'real time'. So if you want your DVD in MN11 (the best LP mode) then the HD version must also be in MN11 for a high speed copy and I don't know if you'd then get auto chapters. Page 71 of the manual implies that you get automatic chapter points in real-time copy only. As mode changing forces real-time copy you get automatic chapter points.
A recording in default LP would be in MN9 so putting it in MN11 is a mode change.

See my note on the mode break points in previous post. There are actually 32 quality levels - MN1-32. Some of these match the default LP, SP etc., so LP=MN9 but the full LP band is MN11-7, SP is MN21 with the full SP quality band running from MN12-31

I actually have a 420, but the principles are identical.
