I'll clarify . . .

my pioneer 530 dvd/hd - cannot play dvds whilst recording
some TV to HD

Q) Is this just a 530 thing or common to this type of recorder ?

bit suprised actullly - also doesnt have the "freeze live tv" that some others have

apart from that - i like it :)

time for a change soon though - but that'll be a seperate thread

thanks

good point

it was an NTSC dvd

mmmmm

so this would be a common "feature" across recorders then ?

thanks for the reply

Yes, I have had quite a few models from different manufacturers and they are all the same, they are in PAL mode or NTSC mode but not both at the same time. Infact Pioneer have the best multi format support as they can record PAL or NTSC or PAL60.

Nothing do with this but when they record NTSC is it "proper" NTSC ?

Given the input will be PAL and the sound and audio will be in the PAL place
will it then record "kosher" NTSC as in a real American machine ?

Yes, if if you give it a true NTSC input then you get an NTSC recording and it will still be NTSC when you play it back.
Note that you can configure the Pioneer to output either PAL60 or NTSC to your TV when you play an NTSC recording.
