I'm worried that the 436XDE is more likely to get scratched, now that Pio have replaced the glass in the 435's with this new "direct colour filter", which I assume is plastic.

    Anyone any thoughts?

The 5G Pios already have the direct color filter! The 4G Pios didn't have it.

Oh, I thought one of the differences between the 435 and the 436 was that the 435 had a glass front filter, whereas the 436 doesn't. Maybe I was wrong then.

So if the 435 had already done away with glass, how did it stand up to scratching? Okay, I hope!

    Cheers

I have not seen the 436 yet but I have seen a 435 on display in sevenoaks and it was severley scratched on the black surround. it did look like the plastic was prone to scratching a bit like the panasonic crt I have at the moment. It was a bit off putting as I am considering the 436 at the moment.

Other thing to consider also is that with less glass it may be more noisy as stated in the 436XDE manual

Not sure if the screen was scratched aswell as I did not really study it. It was just that the scratches on the surround really stood out. I will have a look next time I am in sevenoaks.

I've had a 505XDE for 9 months now & it still looks like new.

Maybe it's because I have no Kids  or the fact that I clean it myself & don't let the wife or cleaner anywhere near it!!

One big advantage over glass is the weight difference in the newer models. You don't need a re-inforced wall or floor to place it on!! :D

    Hi

The 435 definately has a plastic screen, I have had mine for 6 months and it looks brand new, likewise I don't let the wife, cleaner or anybody else anywhere near it, I clean it myself. My only scare has been the discovery of smudges on the screen, which were finally identified as "dog nose prints", easily removed but the hound is now in the dog house (literally!)

Care should be taken with cleaning/handling Plasmas whether or not it is plastic as there is a coating on the glass that can get damaged.

Only use appproved products for cleaning.

What cleaning products should be used? Any that Pioneer suggest/recommend? Something that will not scratch/damage the unit?

The gloss black surround and screen have been cleaned with the silk cloth provided and it looks like new. The remainder of the unit has been cleaned with normal soft cloths.

    TIA
