Hi, just this week I took delivery of a Samsung HD945. I have hooked it up to my Plasma with the supplied HDMI lead. I've got to be honest, I am not that impressed. I have a Pio 717 DVD player and I really can't see much of an improvement over that. I know that the 717 used to be top of the range but it hasn't even got Componant so I thought the leap forward with HDMI might prove impressive, especially after reading one thread in particular on here where someone had compared the samsung with the Pio 868. Anyone else out there feel the same about the Samsung? :(

Dont get me wrong the picture is very good. I just thought it would knock spots off my old Pioneer 717 after reading some reviews. I suppose it was too much to expect a £150 deck to outshine Pioneer's old flagship model even if it is HDMI. still at least I didn't spend £800 on a 868.

You're pioneer DVD player was worth £700 you're new one is worth £200
Technology has moved on enough to improve the features provided at a price however components of the quality haven't changed much, and any possible advances would of been held back by the need for these extra features.
To be honest the DV868 probably isn't worth the difference over the DV668 on the pioneer plasma the Arcam DV79 would be a better option for the price of the DV868.
If you don't want to get burnt again I would get a home trial, most people who deal in DVD players of that sort of cost should offer them!

To feed a panel that size i would have suggested a denon 2910 or a 3910 to get the best of of a 50"er.

    CBOY,

How do you rate your 1910's PQ?

I must admit that I am not over the moon about the Samsung via HDMI compared to my 6 yr old Pioneer DVD that doesn't even have component or DTS.

The improvement is small jumping from S-Video to HDMI and there is still banding on my Pio 435XDE. I am beginning to accept that fact because I have not spent the sort of money on a DV79 or 868. At least I have DTS! I'm saving my money for a decent HD-DVD or BlueRay in a couple of years time.

I have seen the DV79 and 868 looking absolutely perfect on the Pio, so I can say that I got what I paid for. :)

I've got the 945 hooked up to my 435 and whilst it's a great picture, it's really not the leap I was expecting to get, in fact, I think I would struggle to tell the difference between the 945 and my Sony player that I had running through component in a blind test

Considering selling the 945 and waiting for a real HD player next year

I was swapping Playstation 2 cables round today from composite to component and it gave a bigger leap in PQ than the 945 in HDMI. I ordered a QED HDMI cable last week waiting for it to arrive. Let's see whether that makes a difference.

I wonder if anyone has had the chance to see the cheap Samsung and then an expensive pioneer / Denon through the HDMI connection to see if there is a big difference due to the supierior player. I too have not been impressed with pictures through HDMI from the samsung to my 435. But I can accept this if it is down to the player as £158 will not destroy me. However if I spent £500 or more I would feel quite let down.

I've hooked my old Pio 717 back up cause the PQ is almost the same as the 945, think I will probably sell the Samsung.

Has anyone made a comparison between component & HDMI on the 505? I am currently using component on my 747 & wondered whether i could make a significant leap by upgrading to a 868...if not,i will keep what i have until HD DVD/BLU-RAY.

    Dan :)
