I went out to see these two in action yesterday and was lucky enough to see them next to each other at Ask in TCR. I 'asked' them to show me what ever they had other than the DVD source so they put both of them onto the snooker on BBC2 via the same freeview receiver.

For me they were very close in quality but I was convinced by the XDE based on the colour reality (interestingly I thought the Hitachi black was slightly better but th greys and greens the XDE for me was more pleasing to the eye. In the end the £1k difference convinced me and after some fairly painless haggling (I had done my homework on the web) was happy to pay for the brilliant service I got from Ramsay in the shop.

I spent so long comparing the sets that I ran out of time to get advice on a compatible DVD for the XDE. Would welcome any summary/comment as to what criteria I should be looking for to get best results from a combination. :lease:

Thanks guys (and girls) and keep up the highly entertaining and educational input.

The XDE loves it's digital input, you need a player with HDMI output. Your choice depends entirely on budget, £200 - £2800 covers the available price range!

Thanks MAW - I guess mentioning a budget figure of 500-750 might have helped!

One more stupid question (for now) if I may - does the HDMI criteria replace my search for component output?

Yes it does, though all do both if you follow.... Pio 868, denon 2910, maybe a 3910 with a stretch. All great with the XDE via HDMI

Any thoughts/opinions on the Pannie S97 or Samsung (HD945?)?
Worth the price difference going for a Denon 2910?

I got my 505XDE last week together with a 3910 and I'm still trying to get used to the picture; it's simply stunning (especially after 8 years of a 32" CRT via scart). I use the HDMI connection and find it hard to imagine anything better. Haven't really compared other players though.

I'm a moderate denon fan, I always think they are worth the difference. My no. 1 brand has no competing players in this price range, the 2910 is a terriffic buy these days, the 3910 is even better, but costs more obviously. The finances are your affair, don't go without food for any player.

Sorry guys went away for the weekend so just picked up your notes.
Have gone for the Pio 868 as I figured the two should ultimately work together best.
Screen being mounted next weekend so if you are interested will feedback after that.
Just hope I can see the benefit of the money spent on this combination!!

It's known to look good, I'm sure you will be pleased. Saw one the other day with a Sharp 37" LCD, just to remind me how well they work on HDMI.

    Hi Martin,
would 868 HDMI be a serious improvement over component on my 747?

    Thanks,

    Dan :)

I think you'd see the difference, mainly cos of the analogue weakness of the 435 more than the massive improved quality of the player if you see what I mean. Shame, cos the 747 is a great player. I'm sure it will have a 2nd hand value if you choose to go this way. On the basis of my comment, I'm sure you will conclude that almost any digital output player will be good. It's simply down to the marked preference of the 435 for digital inputs. If I was really cynical, I might conclude that Pioneer have done it like this to sell HDMI DVD players. We all know they are a responsible manufaturer with a conscience who would never do a thing like that.

    Yes,
unfortunately it is wishfull thinking! You will need a HD DVD or BLU-RAY player to access those....out of interest, what was being demonstrated on the 868?

    Regards, Dan :)
