Watched this earlier this evening, very interesting look around at the place and people, plus the billions invested into the place and asking if the credit crunch will bite in Dubai. Amazing looking place that 20yrs ago was just sand. Not sure if i like the interiors off some off the expensive hotels though, a bit tacky :D If you had brought properties from 4yrs ago worth $400,000 are now worth or sold for $4m.

Piers was saying just how big the place is when your there, also they plan to make the largest theme park in the world, with life size replicas of The Effiel Tower, Houses of Parliment, Taj Mahal, etc, etc - why not just visit the real things?

Also so many foreigners are over there now, almost as much as the natives. A lot off british people live and work over there and have made loadsa money. They even party and drink all night, where the authorities dont mind too much as long as its on private hotel beaches.

Didn't see the programme but Dubai is completely unsustainble. The whole thing will come crashing down. Can't see why anyone would want to live over there especially now there are far fewer fools to pass ones hot potato on to. They might survive the credit crunch but the energy crunch will get them eventually.

Piers Moron v Ed Byrne on BBC Radio 5 live
On Simon Mayo's show (Monday 26 Jan 2009), the former Mirror
editor Piers Moron was talking about his new documentary series
where he visits the world's most glamorous locations, including Dubai.
Comedian Ed Byrne was the next guest on and decided to take Piers
to task over both Dubai and Britain's Got Talent. Listen as the sparks
    fly between the pair.

    better still, from Dec 07 ;) ...

Jeremy Clarkson & Ian Hislop on Piers Moron
Clarkson and Hislop joined Simon Mayo on BBC 5 live, where they
took the opportunity to air their mutual appreciation for former Daily
Mirror editor Piers Moron, with Clarkson holding up the finger that
ended up somewhat bruised after a bout of fisticuffs with Moron.

I think 'tacky' is not a strong enough word to describe Dubai. This chintzey view of the world based, apparently, on a mix of Las Vagas, New York (which actually has some character) and a Disneyland has little appeal to me I'm afraid. These guys profess to be innovative, but really it seemed like a luxurious version of the past. Putting up buildings that are bigger than the guy next door is a bit sad when nobody much can afford to live or run a business from them.

Whilst they may have a 'liberal' attitude to the ways of people from other parts of the globe they seem to ignore our views about the way they treat their own people. As in many Arab countries women are kept under wraps, literally. It's a male dominated society that is more than out of touch with the rest of the world. I feel the huge tourist influx they predict will never materialise. Their oil is drying up ....then what?

I saw about 10 minutes of it and was completely nauseated by the pathetic way he was sucking up to people and acting so impressed because they've got so much money.

How about doing something philanthropic with all that wealth instead of building playthings for the rich.

I saw this program last night (well this morning to be exact, after recording it :)). It was, some have said, somewhat painful to see P M sucking up to almost every one he stumbled across.

I have been to Dubai and my father owns some property on the Palm Jumeirah island (the original 'island' before the others followed). It is quite a city they've built as everything is so grand and (in some cases) beautiful. The Marina is a bit OTT and for someone born amongst the green grass of Wiltshire, I find it a bit claustrophobic :D I'm a poor photographer but I've some pictures if anyone's interested :)

I don't think you can really knock the Arabs for what they are doing tho, they're only imitating what virtually all other cities in the world have done and people talk of it going bust when the oil runs out, that's not really true as the whole point of attracting the tourists is for the cities economy to carry on thriving when the oil does eventually run out.

Also they tolerate absolutely no crime at all, all the taxi drivers spoke of how uncorrupt and well run the city is, whether that will change in time I don't know. I always felt safe out on the streets, you'd see people leave their mobiles on their dining tables when they went to the loo or leave a car running as they pop into the store. Everywhere I went was exceptionally clean too; but I guess all these factors ultimately depend on where you do and don't go! I never properly visited 'old Dubai', maybe next time :)

How does tourism work in a place of limited resources when oil runs out?

    from a BBC article
Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan has been sacked after the newspaper conceded photos of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi were fake.

    'Recruiting poster for al-Qaeda'
The photos published in the Mirror on 1 May appeared to show British troops torturing an Iraqi detainee.

The BBC's Nicholas Witchell said it appeared Piers Morgan remained unrepentant right to the end
"According to one report Mr Morgan refused the demand to apologise, was sacked and immediately escorted from the building," he said.

    Full story here.

I will not watch anything with him in it, why the hell do discredited people become celebrates like the coughing Major or brown paper envelope MP with wife in tow then go on to get their own programs.

Well, that's the point, isn't it? When the oil drys up they plan to be THE destination of the super rich to live in the luxury and privacy that they desire.

I didn't watch the programme as I can't stand the smug, face of PM (I really can't describe it adequately enough as swearing isn't allowed).

Did he make any mention of the fact that property prices started collapsing last October (25-40% and counting), and that the population is expected to decrease by up to 8% per cent this year as unemployed expats leave in droves? Thought not.

I lived there for 7 years in the late 90's, a fun spot then, but it has been completely over developed in the last seven years. A massive property bubble built on greed and sand, never a good combination.

There were always a lot of obnoxious spivs there, who got jobs becuase of their skin colour and western accents, way above anything they could get back home. No wonder Piers felt so comfortable there.

Abu Dhabi will bail them out at a price, but a lot of expats and overseas investors will lose everything on their multiple properties.

A good spot though for a sun and golf holiday from November to March and good hotel deals should be available next winter as they have shocking over capacity.

I watched this programme - especially because I was about to attend a conference with many people from the Gulf States, including a number from Dubai.

While there I was shocked to hear the extent of the labour camps where hundreds of thousands of migrant workers are kept on a mere pittance of a wage - the whole of the opulence about which Piers Morgan was waxing lyrical is built on this horrendous underbelly of poverty and almost total disregard for human rights.

I am amazed that PM either did not know this, see it, ask anything about it, had his conscience pricked etc etc. For a journalist to fail to inform us of what clearly most in the UK know nothing about is the most shabby form of journalism imagnable.

Was the programme funded by the rulers? Are ITV in hock to them in some way?

When will Piers Morgan do the honest thing for a journalist and tell us the full picture? His recent series of interviews with famous individuals who had a dark side to explore were clear evidence of fearless - even intrusive - journalism. He seems to have undergone a kind of moral lobotomy before visiting Dubai.

yes Piers Morgan the last bastion of investigative journalism.

seriously what has this :censored: ever done, he worked for The Sun on the Bizarre column then went to The Mirror and got sued for muckraking about Naomi Cambell then did a bit of insider trading, published faked photos, got sacked, wandered around doing poor TV with Amanda Platell, wrote a diary that was factually incorrect, then made a pact with the devil ( Simon Cowell ) now he's got some golden handcuffs deal with ITV to do interviews.

    :suicide:

yes your right i dont like him:D

say what you like about Jeremy Clarkson but im glad he chinned Piers
