    Good morning to you all.

Ok I know Sky broadcast an Under 21's football match sometime back , and apparently the quality was very good indeed. However, I imagine there are thousands more HD sucscribers now , all eagerly awaiting the new football season (In HD) on sky , and looking forward to their first treat of Championship/Premiership football.

With the first HD game on shortly , what do we all think of the picture quality.

    Please post your opinions.

    Regards James

Just tuned in. It doesn't look bad, not as good as the BBCHD World Cup transmissions though in my opinion. But that could be because I'm using component cables at the moment because of the HDCP error message and I watched the World Cup using HDMI.

Then again, Luton and Leicester look crap whatever you're watching them on:D

The sound isn't right though. All the crowd noise is coming out of the fronts. Commentary out of the center. All that appears to be coming out of the rears is the "swoosh" noise when different screen graphics appea. It sounds better on SS2 in DPL! :thumbsdow

Are you kidding? It is awful compared to BBC! The 'studio' coverage as well as match. Is it that they don't know how to use the equipment or is it the bitrate ? Anyone? Gosh, look at SD and then flick to HD, is the difference worth £10 a month and a new £300 box....Cricket is much much better IMO (PQ THAT IS, NOT SPORT:rotfl: ). Am I imagining it? :lease:

ps Whats the best setting to have it on 720 or 1080?thanks

Nowhere near as good as the Beeb coverage. If someone walked in your house now, not knowing you had HD, they wouldn't say "wow, that looks four times better than I've ever seen it".

    Pretty poor.

Agree pic is better then SD but but not in a big way, as had been said beeb W/C coverage lot better IMHO. One thing I get is the audio at a lot lower rate on this and the cricket, in fact cricket channel lot lower, is this norm or have I got something not quite setup correctly?

Thank God it's just not me then, thought the old peepers were going.Flicking over to the cricket confirms it. Maybe it's a Kenilworth Road thing. It'll be interesting a week today when Sky visits the KC to see how it looks.

just wondering if the the reason the bbc's w/c coverage is better than ss2hd is that the bbc were using german hd cameras and streaming hd and ss2hd are upscaling 576i sd to 1080i hd?????
    worth asking I thought !

I don't know if they are or not, but if they are it would explain the picture quality difference

No it's definitely HD, just not as good as it could be. I suspect HD2 is using a lower bit rate than HD1 becuase the SD upscaled stuff doesn't look as good either on HD2 compared with HD1.

I was looking out for this game to see what Skys footy will be like. Sadly I was disappointed... minimal difference between the SD channel IMO. A difference yes, but nothing worth paying for.

I hope things get a bit better for the Premiership tbh - its the main thing I got HD for. If Sky skimp on footy quality that would be unforgivable.

i think sky are taking the p1ss out of all of us.the beebs hd footie was excellent and whetted my apetite for the coming domestic season but after watching todays offering for a few minutes I was disgusted.the pq was crap for hd and also too bright imo.as for 5.1 - that was also debatable as they only utilised rear speakers for effects as has already been posted.

we are obligated to them for 12 months but surely they should also be obligated to us to provide some decent stuff ?since having hd installed in June the only worthwhile progs i have seen was the world cup on bbc, everything else i feel i almost have to watch just to justify the £10/month:thumbsdow :thumbsdow :thumbsdow

Just sent an email to Sky, saying how disappointed I was with today's HD luton v leicester match, compared to HD & standard channels there wasn't a big difference. The BBC HD World cup coverage was the reason I shelled out £300 for a Sky HD box, the picture quality was superb.

I hope there's an improvement with PQ in time for the premiership kick-off.
If not, then I will be one livid Sky customer.

PS. Today's Live England cricket match is what HD is all about, the PQ is a huge leap forward, in comparision to the standard channel.

it was strange cos when it showed the players getting off the coach at the beginning the pq looked really good and then for some reason after that was very poor.

I looked like a bitrate problem to me as static shots looked good but fast movement on the pitch seemed blurred .
Even wondered if I needed new glasses!

Looked good to me IMHO. Dont know what you expect from a sunny day at Kenilworth Road. I knew you lot would want more than just an improved picture. Its only HD not 3D.

One thing has occured to me about all this...

Sky have a contract with Arqiva to provide HD facilities for the football league coverage.....does this explain the drop in quality...is the cricket (and hopefully the FAPL) done 'in house'?

Or am I completely wrong and just clutching at straws...:D

I agree the HD quality of the football league is poor, no way near the standard of the bbc world cup coverage.

The pic is nothing to shout home about, i hope the prem pic quality is better.

Just had a quick glimpse at the Coventry v Sunderland game, and am quite impressed with the pq.
I did not see yesterdays game so cannot comment on that but the current game is as good as I remeber the world cup coverage.Certailnly miles better than any SD coverage that I have seen.
The sound on the other hand is not up to much. My amp is indicating its receivind DD but there is absolutely no sound from the surrounds. Checking the cricket and this has plenty of crowd noise coming out of the surrounds.

Same here with the sound. My amp confirms it to be 5.1 but there is nothing coming from the rears. Yesterday's game only had the studio effects coming from the rears. I don't think the PQ is as good as yesterday's...not that that was particularly brilliant either.

I assume Arqiva aren't providing HD facilities for the premiership.
Someone, please clarify ... then I can sleep better.

a quick search finds this http://www.arqiva.com/server.php?show=ConWebDoc.474

which suggests it is only Football League/Carling Cup and also its Arqiva's "first step into HDTV" so it should improve you'd think...

thank god ... in theory the premiership should be the same high HD standard has the live cricket, if so then I'll be a happy Sky customer.
