Hi guys.

Ok, here goes.. I've used compact/bridge cameras all my live without worrying about any setting other than auto.. As long as the picture wasnt blurry I was happy!

Now I'm getting more and more into the deep end of things I like about certain photos taken! Things like depth of field and detail in low light are things I'm very interested in... Like the photos here:

http://www.thephotoargus.com/tips/depth-of-field-how-to-control-it/

But I'm always on a very tight budget!! So not looking to spend a lot!

Can anyone recommend a suitable camera that will give these options at a low price point?

low light + shallow DOF + clean images = expensive.

Whats the budget?

A low cost DSLR option could be 1100D (entry level canon) £270 + 50mm 1.8 £80

Example images @ aperture f1.8/f2

Hi guys

Thanks for the comments and advice.. The budget would be around £200 - £300, but I can always check the classifieds..

How would this bundle do for what I'm after?

Canon EOS 350D + Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II?

Can get it preowned for £170..

Perfect that would get you decent results at a price to performance ratio.

Thanks for the reply..

What would be the difference between these two lenses?

* Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
* Tamron 55-200mm f/4-5.6 Di II LD Macro

...

You won't really get the quality from the tamron, it's a slow, cheap zoom. The prime is much better IMO, especially for what you want to achieve.

For that price you can also look at d3000, Sony models.

When you do get your camera, use the meter only to check your exposure and manually set the ISO, aperture and shutter speed. It won't take long to realise that only three things matter, the size of the hole, the sensitivity of the film and how long you open the shutter for. The game then is choosing the compromise for different situations, I could never go back to auto now it would be like enjoying driving and having a chauffeur.....

of course the Tamron while not as good/fast as the 50mm - it does have 4x the zoom range and it isn't that bad optically IMO so choice may depend on what sort of shooting you're doing and whether you need very shallow Depth of Field as close range.

Thanks for all the help guys. I went with the Canon EOS 350D and EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens

Got both as a bundle for £149 which seems like a good price..
