Philips DVP5960 problem when playing from external hard drive

when i try to connect up my western digital 2.5 portable hard drive the drive will sound like it is powering up but nothing happens. it worked the first time i connected it but now it doesnt. I thought it may be the dvd player itself so i got a replacement and the same is happening. The hard drive is working with the computer btw. Any help would be greatly appreciated

you may find it's because the DVD player can't supply enough power to the drive. You could try it with a USB power adaptor if a Y cable came with the drive to give the extra juice required.
