Philips DVP5960/05

Hey guys, just curious if anybody has any experience with the above DVD player, Im looking for something to compliment my Toshiba 32WLT66 lcd which is being delivered on Monday but im on a bit of a budget and these seem reasonably priced for the features (HDMI, Upscaling, Divx certification etc.)

I also have an xbox 360 and Ive heard that these upscale DVDs when using the VGA cable, I already have the VGA cable as I currently use it on my PC monitor (hard to tell wether it upscales or not thoough as its on a 22" Iiyama CRT). I know that chances are a stand alone player is going to be better but can anybody tell me how they rate the 360's DVD playback and upscaling, and is upscaling possible through component on the 360.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sean

Thanks mate looks to be a slightly different model as the 5960 supports Divx Ultra which isnt mentioned on the 5900 other than that i would imagine they are pretty similar though Ill have a read. Good to get some advice off a fellow Geordie :D.
Heres a link to the 5960 specs

:lease:  Dose anyone know how to region free a Philips DVP5960 as mine is fixed on region 2 only. Any help on this matter would be most helpful.

I've just got this player and it's working great so far. The hack at videohelp.com worked perfectly, there's no problems with dvd playback, it plays .mpg as well as .avi on DVDs (my dvd player before could only handle .mpg when on CD), it plays MP3-DVDs, and I've connected an external hardrive and it plays video files from that as well.

In fact the only problem I've encountered is that when I'm playing a divx disc or files from the hardrive I can't get back to the menu - am I missing something completely simple or are other people having problems with this?

I have this player and have an Evesham V32EMRO-ZE3 coming tomorrow.
As the Phillips can output HDMI with upscaling AND component with prog scan, I was wondering is there any preference as to which I should connect with or are the differences negligable??
Thanks.

If anyone else was having the same problem I was to get back to the menu you have to press stop twice. Not particularly intuitive, or mentioned in the manual, but hey: at least it works.

This Philips machine is an excellent choice for a video-based system. For the price, it's PQ is second to none. However, the audio section is rather rudimentary. If you require the latest in audio refinements, get the Pioneer 696.

I like the Philips, but it's simply a temporary primary machine until my Panasonic DVD-S99 arrives sometime early next year. Then it becomes my secondary player for R1 and R4 titles.

I thought this was the one I was looking for as a temporary measure until the PS3's upscaling firmware upgrade Sony keep teasing us with.

I was planning to connect it via HDMI to upscale DVDs and hoping to connect the audio via optical out to an AV receiver.

From the specs, however, it doesn't seem to have an optical out is this correct?

You are correct, the 5960 only has co-axial out , not optical
