Got a pack of 10 Philips brand DVD blanks DVD+RW yesturday at Currys good value at £9-99.

There is a warning on packet to see the enclosed leaflet on upgrading before use. There is NO leaflet.
Also a web site to look at www.DVDRWservices.com
    there is no such site.
First time I've seen such a note on other brands nothing.
Anyone know about upgrading the DVD recorder in order to use Philips brand?

Some of the older Philips machines will not recognise the faster rated +RWs. If they are rated 1-4x (as I think those Philips discs are) then they should be OK to use straight off. If they are just 4x, then you may need a firmware upgrade for the recorder.

You can have a look at the DVDplusRW.org website, and do a search for your Philips recorder and the most recent firmware upgrades (which will be on the Philips website). Be warned that upgrading the firmware is not always straightforward, and some would advise against it unless you really need to.

What model is yours, BTW, and when did you buy it?

Looks like it is on a secret menu, as I can't see that on visible menus.

You have ff16d firmware (bottom line of text, in the middle). Not the most up-to-date, but I would be happy with that version if it were my machine.

A distillation of the experiences on the DVDplusRW forum is that this firmware should certainly be able to accomodate the use of 4x discs, so it shouldn't matter whether they are 1-4x or just 4x.

Seeing as they are Philips discs, you should go ahead and use them. Let us know how you get on...
