Getting a bit annoyed with my player - was working fine (bought it from Play on 17th June) and now I have noticed two problem discs....

One - DVD Amityville Horror (freezes at layer change and misses 2 mins of footage).
Two - CD single - Run Baby Run by Garbage (aus release - just spits this one out and won't read it).

Wierd! I dont know if this is just uncanny that I have two faulty discs or whether the player is stuffed. I have tried these on other players. The Garbage CD presents no problems on every other player and the DVD was fine on my Pioneer DVD 360 but had a similar fault on my Sony DVD 725 (that machine is full of probs though!) All else seems ok so far... I didnt really think that CD's / DVDs in mint condition suffered faults!

Really lovely player, but if it is going to be unreliable....

Anyone know if this could be a firmware issue or does it sound like the player needs a repair?

    Hi Corrado.

I had a similar problem with my DVP 720SA, it would not play "The Fifth Element" correctly I could not get it go past chapter 11.
DVD's would take 20-30 seconds to be recognised, it was the same with CD's.

I upgraded the fimware to version 33. All was well, then I noticed it stuttered on a few DVD's..
Downgraded the firmware to version 31, now everything is fine.

I am not certain if you can upgrade the firmware on the 963 ?
Philips don't seen to have any firmware upgrades on their site.
I hope I am wrong and you can upgrade the firmware.

    Best of luck
    Kevin

    Hey Lupo!

I believe that there are firmware upgrades available, but I called Philips and the guy was no help at all.
Said the player is probably nackered and that I should send it back...

You don't think it is a dodgy laser then?

Lupo - The slow speed for loading discs is because Philips use a DVD-ROM drive.

As for the not playing discs, I have a few that don't play on my 963SA, too. Thankfully not very many.
The 963 is very intollerant of damage to, or poor encoding of, the directory blocks on the discs. However once the disc is playing I've never had any issues with it. The same seems to be going on here.

For CDs that spit out, one thing that seems to work is to buff the disc a bit (obviously being careful not to scratch it in the process). Sometimes that's all it takes to get the disc playing. Sometimes not.

Funny you say that - the disc did work when I played it but has now been spat out.

By the way - have you upgraded your firmware?

By the way - my firmware is version 4.81.22 and the servo version is 7.12 if that helps?

The jitter spec for discs is not always met (The fifth Element is the classic example). Some players follow the spec (original Tag) and fail to play disc. The player is fine, the disc is at fault. Other players are more tollerant of faulty discs, I have had no disc read errors on my 963s but I do get the odd one on other players including the Tag.

The fault may not lie with the player but the disc, I know it doesn't help any as it still doesn't play but....or it could just be bust!!

22 firmware is the norm but not the latest but I doubt it is worth updating as differences were minor.

The upgrade of firmware and then downgrade made a big difference to my 720.
It was that bad before the firmware change I was going to send it back.
whether the firmware upgrade will make a difference for you I don't know, you have nothing to lose. Give it a go.

    hope you get it sorted.

My understanding is that the firmware only changes registers on the ADV7300A and the .25 firmware is also supposedly better for SACD playback because it solves some earlier issues with hybrid discs.

I have never noticed any differences so keep with 22 but I am a SDI guy.....

Play.com have said that I can have a refund or exchange and I think I am going to go for a refund....

I want to find a replacement with the same level of quality - does the Samsung HD 950 sound like a good idea??

At the moment I am connecting SACD with 5.1 analogue outputs - how do you output SACD from the Samsung - same way?

few if any have any experience of the 950 so no comments yet.

SACD will have to come out analogue as well on that player, if you want the same quality as the 963 you are going to have to pay lots more money....:(
