Hands on with the Philips Ambilight 42PF9831D set
http://www.hdtvuk.tv/2006/03/hands_on_with_t.html#more

£3,500 April 2006 (UK)

No support for 1080p signals though:thumbsdow .

Does have dual HDMI inputs :smashin: .

'The set also has problems with fast moving images. LCDs always struggle with quick objects which invariably leave a trail of image lag. The 42PF9831D is better than most, but still struggled a little when displaying the Champions League final in HD.'

Wow factor: The 9831 is Philips' flagship LCD HDTV equipped with the latest Ambilight Full Surround and Pixel Plus 3 HD technologies

Other notable frills:
Onboard digital tuner
Philips' Clear LCD technology for enhanced motion sharpness, black levels and contrast
Onboard multimedia playback via USB ports and memory card slots
Built-in networking with optional Wi-Fi upgrade
Multimedia access via PC-link
Dual HDMI terminals

I've seen the LCD TV I want to own and it's the Philips 37PF9731D!

- Ambilight? - Check!
- Scanning backlight? - Check!
- Digital tuner? - Check!
- Hi res panel? - Check!
- Twin HDMI? - Check!
- WiFi? - Check!
- Good looking? - Check!
- Narrower frame so that it'll fit in my lounge? - Check!
- Native resolution PC connectivity? - Er, dunno (I guess you can't have everything!)

Hooray! Hooray! Hooray!

According to this article the Pixel Plus 3HD is optimized for 1366x768 panel resolution.
I really don't know what to think, Philips is shooting foot again with the downgrade of the resolution, so from the 42PF9830 (1920x1080 panel) we go to the 42PF9831D (1366x768).
Nice move Philips can't wait for the 42PF9832D with the 640x480 resolution and Pixel Plus 4 HD:thumbsup:

The above address is correct for some reason the .pdf at the end is p df.
Copy the address and paste it, before hit enter go to the end of this address and fix the p df to pdf.
I suppose this is PHILIPS REVENGE:rotfl:

what does all this mean?

what is 1080p and 1080i......

What are the problems that can arise with the philips resolution?

Have been waiting for this tv and now reading all the technical banter I dont know what to do!!!!

The problem with the resolution comes from LG the company that gives the 42"
'1920x1080 panels to Philips just dont have enough supplies.
The best part is that the 42PF9830 is no longer available with the 1920x1080 panel but only with the 1366x768.
So be carefull when you buy the 42PF9830.
As for the 42PF9831D........AVOID:thumbsdow

And ClearLCD will not be featured on the 37" (i.e. 37PF9831).

Where have you seen that "ClearLCD" will not be on the 37" ?

Captain don't be confused with all this technical infos, if you want to be future proof seek a TV with a native panel resolution of 1920x1080 that it can accept 1920x1080 progressive signals (1920x1080p) not only 1920x1080 interlaced (1920x1080i).
So 1920x1080p GOOD.
1920x1080i NOT SO GOOD.
1366x768, 1024x1024, 1280x720, 1024x720 OUT OF THE QUESTION

Just read the leaflet
No mention of the PF379731 though which I am assuming does have clearLCD

Buying a true 1080p LCD might not be the best at the present moment, with sky and the rest pretty much stating they'll use 720p i guess you're future proofed enough with these models, and by the time 1080p is in the mainstream (how many years could that be?) for viewing i'd bet that there'll be a lot more technology available, so i'm pretty much decided on holding out for a few years yet before going for any type of 1080p screen, because theres a lot of new technology on the horizon to take over from LCD within the next 5 years.

Anyway, i think it looks great, if it sorts out some of the problems associated with the 9830 then it'll be a winner, its just a shame they release it so late, as i've went out and bought an LCD now.

Sorry - should have said look at the table in the document,
'FlatTV Range Fact Sheet'

The 37" definately will not feature ClearLCD - as is clearly shown in the table in Philips word doc.

ps. If I recall correctly Philips have recently withdrawn the 42PF9830 from sale as they have been struggling to get hold of 42" 1920x1080 panels.

Blu-Ray players (i.e. Pioneer, Sony) hit the UK market in September. Many of the first generation Blu-Ray players can output 1080p

The new Denon AVC-A1XVA AV Amp has scaling to 1080p, as do an increasing number of SD DVD players.

Buying a 1920x1080 panel in 2006 which does not support 1080p signals would be nuts imho (unless cost is an issue of course).

The new SONY X-Series 1920x1080 panels acceopt 1080p - 46" in April, 40" in September (if I recall correctly).

Yeah, i think a lot of folk are holding off the blu-ray until further information is released, plus the release dates get pushed further back all the time.

For me though i'm more interested in actual TV and some DVDs, 720p will do that job well, and i'd probably struggle to notice any real difference between 720p and 1080p from 12 foot away (my viewing distance).

The 37" definately will not feature ClearLCD.

The table only mentions the 37PF9631D.
No mention of PF379731 so will this TV actually be available ?

I have just had contact with Philips here in Holland, and they have assured me there *WILL* be 37 and 32 inch versions of the clearLCD panels.

I'm not sure but I remember reading somewhere that the 37" (which is called 9731, NOT 9831) *will* be a 1920x1080 panel. Not sure about the 32" though.

I'm hearing different things about availability. I have one reply that states there will be a 32" as soon as April.

Yes - sorry, you are right - I miss read the table.

Strange why the documents make no mention of a 37PF9731/37PF9831. Perhaps this model will only be sold in UK/Europe.

Still looks definate that the 37PF9831 will not accept 1080p signals though, which is a great shame.

I suspect the reason the new 42PF9831 has been downgraded to 1366x768 is because Philips are still struggling to get hold of 42" 1920x1080 panels. I understand they recently withdrew the 42PF9830 from sale for this very reason.
