Best thing is to choose a supplier and wait for stock - No dealer seems to be able to carry any stock.

I have waiting for about a fortnight for mine and I might get one in about 10 days or so.

Try Unbeatable or Robertsons etc - None of the major High street suppliers have em listed

    Cheers

I heard that due to short demand dealers are not allowed to stock them.

They have to provide proof of orders to Philips before Philips will send them any players.

Robertson's get a delivery from Philips once a week (Thursdays).

Picture is almost HCPC quality. PAL is reported as being 625P and NTSC 525P from my AE100.

    Hi James,

Happy as Larry so far. The picture is great much better than S-Vid, component or my Pro-V but not quite PC perfection but pretty close.

The hacks were a bit fiddly (instructions not clear) but both worked. Theres an interlaced/progressive switch on the back of the player which i hadn't seen. Doh!!

    Jonny,
thanks for getting back....I've ordered a 963, they should
have it in 1 week so hopefully not long after that i'll have it.
Already using component from Sony 725 player so really looking
forward to see if the progressive makes a big difference and
I read on here that one owner found the onboard decoder to
be better than his Yamaha amp so I will be trying that out with my Sony 925.....might aswell use them if they're better...

Got mine today from unbeatable.co.uk, took about a week - impressive service.

I've got a problem with trying to do the region hack, the 963SA isn't responding with signals sent from my Palm Tungsten with OmniRemote, RC6 code or any Philips DVD remote code isn't working. I've tried Omni with a Sony TV and that works.

I'm going to try and borrow a different Palm and see if that helps. Has anybody managed to do the region hack with a Palm on the 963SA?

PAL Progressive hack worked well but that only uses the player's remote anyway.

I did my region hack with a basic clie (with normal IR). Needed to be very close (like 1cm) away from the IR receiver on the DVD player, but it was fine. You get the dashes up, then input the code numbers on your philips remote.

Do the 'dashes' appear on the display on the actual player itself, or on the TV screen the player is connected to ??

I managed to do the hack using an Allinone remote, that I had lying around.

First impressions of the 963SA are excellent. Image quality is great, the usual rich colours we expect from the recent Philips players. Deinterlacing is of course great with the SAGE chipset but I noticed bad shimering and edge enhancement in progressive mode particular with text. I didn't see this in interlaced mode so then checked the "progressive only" settings and noticed the "True Life" default setting was at +3, after setting this to 0 it removed the edge enhancement and shimmering problem.

The major thing, at least for me, is that there is NO Chroma Bug, or at least the SAGE chipset hides it so well it isn't noticeable.

The only disappointment so far is the response of the player to the remote control, you need to point the remote directly at the player for it to respond, bouncing off walls doesn't work so well. I'm going to have to rearrange my HIFI.

Well, I've been searching the last 3 years for a player like this, after spending a lot of money on various players, and can't believe what a bargain this player is - £310 from unbeatable.co.uk

They appear on the player itself. I put the player into stop mode without a DVD inside when doing the hack, don't know if this makes any difference though.

    widescreen,

Great info on the 963SA, could you answer me a few questions.

Now that you have it set up properly is it completely free from shimmering and jaggie lines on sharp moving defined edges as this is very important to me before I decide to buy as I was considering spending double this to get a player that displays a clean smooth image.

How does the picture compare between interlaced and pal progressive ?

Are you using it on a TV or a projector ?

    Cheers Klippie.

    Klippie,
Yes, the jaggies and shimmering are gone - just a nice smooth image now. :D After tuning the DVD player and my projector the picture is now excellent - I'm extremely happy with it.

Differences between interlaced and progressive are subjective due to the quality differences of your projector/TV's deinterlacer. They aren't really noticeable on my system due to my projector having a great deinterlacer - but I needed the progressive output due to lipsync issues with my projector.

I guess you may be talking about the Denon 3800 which I was also seriously considering but the 963SA does pretty much everything that can with just as good image quality. Although the Denon is known to have very fast speeds for menus and chapter changes.
