    Hi,
I may be doing something stupid here but i am having problem getting proper digital out from my 963.
On my Denon 3802 it now says "Direct DVD" on the display and i cannot change any of the parameters , IE Pro Logic 2, Stereo, 6CH Stereo, Digital Etc.
Also the only adjustments to speaker volumes are FR FL and SW
My Center and 2 rear adjustment have gone.
With other sources via optical Xbox, PS2 its fine,
Seems to be a 963 issue
Ive trowled through the menus to no avail, maybe ive missed something simple :)
Any help will be appreciated, thanks

    John

I have this problem as well, if I turn on the DVD player while the amp is on it switches to direct input. If you press the Dolby/DTS blue input button on the remote it shoud default back to DPL II.
That is what I do, not sure if there is a way of stopping the amp going straight to Direct mode.

    Hope this helps

Sounds like the problem only happen to Denon receiver.

I have the same problem on my 3802, but if I press nothing and when the movie is played, then the display will changed to DPL II, not DD as I think should be.

Are yours the same as well?

Mine always defaults to "direct" and stays on direct once the movie starts.
Since there does not seem to be any answers to this from any knowledgable people out there, I am begining to think that maybe it should work like this and we are stupid for not realising.
It is not a mjor problem just means I'll have to spend another couple of hours teaching the missus she needs to press one more button.

    Jules12,

I think you might be correct, this might not be a "bug", may be just how Denon handling digital in signal, have someone else tested this with other DVD player?

    What is "Direct" anyway?

Its going into "Direct" mode because you have CD upsampling set at either 96 or 192Khz, and as soon as you switch on the Philips, this is the signal it sends down.

The Denon can only work with 96Khz PCM in Direct Mode (it can't handle 192Khz via Digital at all)

    puddleduck,

thanks for the reply and I think you're right. I re-read the 3802 manual 5 minutes ago before reading your post and found something like what you've said, after reading your post then this statement make sense to me now ;)

On page 54, a small box at the bottom read:

    NOTE:
Only the DIRECT and 5CH/7CH STEREO modes can be used when playing PCM signals with a sampling frequency of 96 kHz (such as from DVD-Video discs that contain 24 bit, 96 kHz audio). If such signals are input during playback in one of the other surround modes, the mode automatically switches to DIRECT.

BTW, is the CD upsampling on 963SA affect DVD-video as well? But anyway I'm not thinking of this anymore because as mentioned by others, we just have to press some buttons to get it right.

I'm now having a bigger headache with calibrating sound with AVIA + 963sa + 3802, it's really killing me, after some advise from members in here but still couldn't get it right, seems like this weekend is occupied :(

BTW, is the CD upsampling on 963SA affect DVD-video as well?

No it only affects CDs, but while the 963SA is identifying the disk (CD, SACD or DVD) its basically sending an empty signal via Digital.

    Guys,

For what is worth I will add my "experience" too. For the past two years I have been using a Denon AVR 3801 and I never encountered the little problem described here. The difference?
If it means anything I have never used it with the Philips DVD player. However in times it has been connected to Denon, Toshiba and Pioneer DVD players with no problems whatsoever.
The current setup employs the latest Pio player DV-757Ai.
Could there be really something to do with the particular player from Philips?
