Bought a Philips DVP720SA from DABs for £48 as I fancied playing some SACDs. Upgraded the firmware to fix some bugs with the SACD playback and then thought I can use it instead of my 6 year old Sony 7700.

Then I thought I could use the Philips for DVDs as well...

Felt really guilty disconnecting the Sony but kept it on the shelf below. Have played a few dvds over the last few weeks on the Philips and it has been just about OK. Locked up after the Incredibles and couldn't open the drawer.

Last night tried the Assault on Precinct 13 remake. Philips froze at the start of the first trailer. Tried it 3 times, all the same. Reconnected the Sony 7700 and it played beautifully first time. Sony remote is miles better than the tat that comes with the Philips.

So the Sony is still my DVD player and I'm just going to use the Philips for CDs/SACDs. Can't see any difference in picture quality on my 6 year old Panny 50Hz 32" but the Sony is just a great player to have and to use.

P.S. I thought Assault on P13 was rubbish as well!
