Would love some comments from users who have the Philips model if they are pleased with the 9976.

I do realise the 2 sets are similarly priced but i really like the look of this Philips set lots compaired to the rather boring looking Hitachi.

I know connectability wise the Hitachi is streets ahead but main use will be with Freeview and DVD with progressive scan and perhaps the PC too now and again.

I know the new Philips sets have pixel plus 2 but i dont particulary like the look of them and ambilight doesnt interest me at all.

Could any 9976 owners give me a little report if they are happy with their picture quality, and any little annoyances i should be wary of.

    Thanks in advance. :)

I bought a 32pf9976 about 6 weeks ago, so far I’ve had to have set replaced due to annoying humming sound and the remote had to be exchanged due to a sticking button.
Other than that so far I’m pleased with it, but I’m not really in a position to rate it ‘cause I’ve not had anything to compare it to.
When connected to my (cheap) dvd player & Sky+ I’m impressed with the picture quality, so no complaints.
My only gripe is the instruction manual supplied is cr*p & I’ve picked up far more info relating settings etc off this site.
Sorry can’t be of more help.

    Dave

Very good picture quality, especially with HDTV programs (Euro1080 and QualiTV receiver, 1080i). Not bad with SD too. The chipset and software (firmware) is the same as 9986. From service menu it is possible to change pixelplus to pixelplus2. It looks like for standard definition programs Philips 9986 is the best. 9976 is the same without second tuner and ambilight.

Thanks guys i love the look of this set and think i will treat myself tomorrow. £1289 i think is the best i've seen it for so far from an online store.

Same price near enough of £1299 at Currys and Dixons online except they have no stock.

Hope mine isn't a buzzing one!

    Getting excited now LOL

    Hi Tont,
is it really possible to change a 9976 to PP2 from the service menu ?
PP1 was one of the reasons I discounted this set as I have seen it working very badly in demonstrations. If this is possible then maybe I should consider it again ? I suppose I should ask can a normal 'user' access the service menu ?
    Thanks,
    TonyK.

Yes, it is possible to change in service menu 9976 PixelPlus to PixelPlus2 and in service menu 9986 PP2 to PP but I can not tell difference because I got only 9976. I think that on 9986 and 9976 PixelPlus = PixelPlus2 (chipset and firmware, I got 2.3, is the same).9976 PixelPlus on HDTV programs (1080i DVI) is very effective . 9956 has different chipset and firmware, and different PixelPlus (not working on HDTV signals) too.

Having read this I just had to find the service menu codes and try changing the PixelPlus version on my PF9976 (firmware 2.5). I found the setting and now I've got PP2 or at least the menu says so. Having used the Movieplus-option before and not having a chance for direct picture quality comparison either I can't tell whether there really is an improvement in PixelPlus quality or is it just the menu texts, but it makes me feel better at least. A slight halo effect can be seen around moving people, but only if one knows what to look for (my wife couldn't see it). After all, this wouldn't be the first device where higher spec goodies are just hidden, not really missing. A friend of mine has got a dish washer which shouldn't have the remaining time display, but when it's dark green LED numbers can be seen glowing through its white plastic front panel :)

Thanks for the tip! Too bad I can't make the missing Ambilight lamps appear just by fiddling in the service menu... Actually there are two narrow plates on both sides of the back panel which could be covering the Ambilight lamp slots.

LOL shhhhhh it be a laff if it had hidden ambilight too! :D Where can i get replacement Ambilights then to plug into my hidden slots? LOL

My 9976 is coming Friday now sigh. Ebuyer wanted a fax, utility bill or passport faxed before they would even look at my order.

They even just cancelled it without telling me why. Stuff that for a carry on, so ordered it from The Plasma Centre with no problems whatsoever.

    Ebuyers loss.

Hardly anyone had it in stock, at reasonable prices anyway. It's amazin how much the prices vary, it sure does pay you to shop around.

My 9976 was £1300 from the Plasma Centre yet for the same TV its over £2070 from Savastore  What is that all about?

Anyway roll on Friday till i start playing.

As i want to try out my DVD player with progressive scan when i get my 9976 on Friday, what cables will i need to try it out, as i believe the TV comes with a little adaptor for the DVI socket.

My Yamaha DVD Player has the 3 component outputs, do you get the correct cables with the Philips 9976 apator or do you have to purchase them additionally.

    Thanks for any help. :)

Philips 9976 has VGA to Component cable-adaptor, 1,5 meter long. In this cable RC connectors are female type. You will need ordiary component video cable (with male connectors), or 3 female
    to male RC adaptors.

I'm still having fun with my new TV. Don't really see much difference with progressive scan from my DVD player. Hmmmmm.

Found the customer service menu by hitting 123654 but it's just for imformation, isn't it?

Still wishing to find out the service menu though. Anyone?

Oh forgot to say i connected the PC and tried some Hi Def videos, all i can say is WOW absolutely stunning. PC output is rock solid and crystal clear, i'm over the moon.
