Just bought a Philips DVP 3005 player this morning, cheap, £40, progressive scan (which is why I bought it). The picture quality on Prog scan is abysmal its soft like watching through a net curtain. Is this the player, or my projector. (the output is 480p(525p)@60hz)

The picture is great on my old Toshiba SD220e, also connected thru component but not prog scan so i'm inclined to say its the player.

Anyone got any experience of a similar setup or got any advice please?

    About £200 if i recall.

Just how expensive do i have to go to get decent prog scan? Surely its not worth having on a cheap dvd player if its no good? It will only get used with high end kit and sent beck when it doesnt perform.

I was hoping that another ET-1 owner had sucessfully experienced prog scan, so I know its not the projector.

I have my PC connected to my PJ so all DVD stuff goes through there. I'm no expert but I would say it is the case that companies often put features on players to make them sell. It would be a waste of time for any company to produce DVD players over £30 if all DVD players were the same quality! Thats why generally expensive players even if they have less features produce a better picture!

P.S. Lovin' the Tosh ET1

    Could be several things TBH

If you are playing a standard PAL R2 DVD disc, then the output should be 576p/50 not 480p/60 (which would be right for an R1 NTSC disc). Have you set the DVP3005 up for PAL or NTSC?
Check the setup of the player again.

If you're reasonably sure that the issue is with the DVD player rather than the projector you might get more help asking in a different forum.

Have you explored the DVD player's menu options? There may be some useful settings to fiddle with eg detail/sharpness. Also there may be an option to turn prog scan off which may be a useful pointer...PJ

I've been right through the menus. But I bought it FOR the prog scan in the first place.

fordy...how did you get on in the end with this player?

i've read the specs 12bit/108mhz...so it should be able to create a good picture.

took it back, stayed with my Tosh SD220, it has a superior picture in comparison. On projector anyway, on tv its no different. Could be a limitation in the projector, but who knows. My mates got an Tosh 350e, hes bringing it round soon and i'll give that a go.
