Given that price was not an issue, which is the better and why. Panny PHD7 or Pioneer 435XDE. Not interested in using it for PC input

Panny PHD7 is currently not future proof with the likes of Sky HD material whereas the 435 is, personally right now, id go for the Pio.

I hear that the Panny has better black values. So if you are a movie watcher.

    One happy Pio owner.

Leigh's right, neither the DVI or HDMI board are compatible with the 720p50 signal to be broadcast by Sky in 2006. You may also want to consider the NEC 42XM3 or XR3 besides the 435XDE.

BUT - can't we assume that panny will bring out a DVI or HDMI board that IS compatible ?

(please say yes as I have a panny PHD7, lol)

I'm afraid I wouldn't really trust Panasonic to look after their European customers on HD issues. Their recent track record seems to prove it.

    Hi Gary,

Well, if the Aurora A304-HDCP card doesn't take 50Hz on the DVI, I guess I'll be in the market for a new plasma if I want to watch SkyHD.

I just can't make myself happy with the analogue inputs on the XDE. I admit the digital is excellent, but what are you going to do for the next 2 years? And that assumes that sky do not modify their plans, that HD is affordable, and that there is enough content to make you want to buy it. I suppose I'll have to have skyHD, but really, how many will go for it in the 1st year or 2?

I've seen several demos of the Pio and with low quality inputs it's shocking...

That's why so many punters are buying Vieras despite future proofing issues...

Who inputs low quality signals into a 3K TV?

If you use RGB or component sources then the Pioneer 435XDE is a great Plasma.

OK with freeview or Sky you need to sit a reasonable distance away to reduce the encoder blocky structure (Which you can see on any TV at the right distance! i.e. small screen close up, large screen further away.)

Sit at a distance of 3M + and you will have no problems (2M if only viwing DVD etc.)

Go to a Sevenoaks branch and sit on a couch and see with your own eyes. Forget high street stores as they mke all Plasma TVs look crap!

I agree with Maw, HD will be good to have but I think you are all being a bit keen with regards to SkyHD. I think it will be 2 years or so before its off the ground and worth getting and at what cost to the consumer......yet another subscription to bump up your existing?

I think by the time it is worth watching due to the limited content we will all be ready for an upgrade by then!

So just go and feed your plas the best you can and worry about hd when it has something worth watching.

    sorry, cant agree with that.

dont fancy blowing 2k-3k on a plasma now that will rendered useless and maybe worthless in 3 years time?

i'd rather wait a couple of months if i have to, then get the most future proof plasma possible so i can get 7+ years out of it...

It will not be rendered useless by any means, this is all based on one dodgy sky press release that will most likely be revised and re-issued 10 more times before release of any hardware, and even so, currently you can go buy your own sky box if you want to. To think there is enough volume in UK/Europe for them to have a proprietary box built would be Murdoch's wishful thinking. It will be an off the shelf unit, working in the same way as the ones you can buy now.
